Robert Lambert Hastings (born May 6, 1950), or Robert L. Hastings, is an American ufologist, author, and filmmaker known for claims regarding UFOs and Malmstrom Air Force Base. [1] [2] Hastings believes the earth is "being visited by beings from another world, who for whatever reason have taken an interest in the nuclear arms race" and claims that "a global conspiracy exists in which all major governments have been covering up evidence of UFOs for decades." Early life and Malmstrom incident

Hastings was born in Albuquerque, New Mexico. His father, Robert E. Hastings, was a member of the United States Air Force and was stationed at the Malmstrom Air Force Base in Great Falls, Montana. As a teenager, (Robert L.) Hastings worked at the Malmstrom Air Force Base air traffic control tower as a janitor. In March 1967, he and air traffic controllers claim they witnessed the radar tracking of five UFOs maneuvering near nuclear missile silos. [1] [4] [5] [6]

Education and career

Hastings received a BFA in Photography at Ohio University in 1972 and later worked as a photographic technician at Northern Illinois University from 1973 to 1981. Between 1981 and 2017, he spoke at more than 500 US colleges and universities claiming that the U.S. government has covered-up evidence of UFOs. He studied electron microscopy between 1986 and 1988 at San Joaquin Delta College. From 1988 to 2002, Hastings worked as a laboratory analyst at Philips Semiconductors in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Over the years, Hastings has interviewed over 160 veterans regarding claimed UFO incursions at nuclear weapons facilities. He compiled the interviews into the book titled UFOs & Nukes: Extraordinary Encounters at Nuclear Weapons Sites, which was first published in 2008. [7] The second edition was published in 2017. In 2016, he directed the documentary UFOs and Nukes: The Secret Link Revealed, featuring several of the veterans he interviewed for the similarly titled book. On September 27, 2010, he hosted a press conference at the National Press Club in Washington D.C.

According to skeptical author Benjamin Radford, Hasting's claims lack "new evidence or real proof" but instead are "merely a rehashing of old, discredited reports that didn't yield any significant evidence when they were originally reported decades ago." [3]

UFO conspiracy theories are a subset of conspiracy theories which argue that various governments and politicians globally, in particular the United States government, are suppressing evidence that unidentified flying objects are controlled by a non-human intelligence or built using alien technology. Such conspiracy theories usually argue that Earth governments are in communication or cooperation with extraterrestrial visitors despite public disclaimers, and further that some of these theories claim that the governments are explicitly allowing alien abduction.

The Roswell incident is a conspiracy theory which alleges that the 1947 United States Army Air Forces balloon debris recovered near Roswell, New Mexico, was actually a crashed extraterrestrial spacecraft. Operated from the nearby Alamogordo Army Air Field and part of the top secret Project Mogul, the balloon was intended to detect Soviet nuclear tests. After metallic and rubber debris were recovered by Roswell Army Air Field personnel, the United States Army announced their possession of a "flying disc". This announcement made international headlines, but was retracted within a day. To obscure the purpose and source of the debris, the army reported that it was a conventional weather balloon.

Robert Scott Lazar is an American conspiracy theorist. In 1989, Lazar claimed to have been part of a classified US government project concerned with the reverse engineering of extraterrestrial technology; he also purported to have read government briefing documents that described alien involvement in human affairs over the past 10,000 years. Project Blue Book was the code name for the systematic study of unidentified flying objects by the United States Air Force from March 1952 to its termination on December 17, 1969. The project, headquartered at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio, was initially directed by Captain Edward J. Ruppelt and followed projects of a similar nature such as Project Sign established in 1947, and Project Grudge in 1949. Project Blue Book had two goals, namely, to determine if UFOs were a threat to national security, and to scientifically analyze UFO-related data.

Sandia Base was the principal nuclear weapons installation of the United States Department of Defense from 1946 to 1971. It was located on the southeastern edge of Albuquerque, New Mexico. For 25 years, the top-secret Sandia Base and its subsidiary installation, Manzano Base, carried on the atomic weapons research, development, design, testing, and training commenced by the Manhattan Project during World War II. Fabrication, assembly, and storage of nuclear weapons was also done at Sandia Base. The base played a key role in the United States nuclear deterrence capability during the Cold War. In 1971 it was merged into Kirtland Air Force Base.

The Mariana UFO incident occurred in August, 1950 in Great Falls, Montana. The sighting, filmed by local baseball coach Nick Mariana, is believed to be among the first ever motion picture footage of what came to be called an unidentified flying object (UFO). The U.S. Air Force, after a short investigation, concluded that what Mariana had actually filmed were the reflections of two F-94 jet fighters, a claim that the Air Force would later retract.

On 29 August 2007, six AGM-129 ACM cruise missiles, each loaded with a W80-1 variable yield nuclear warhead, were mistakenly loaded onto a United States Air Force (USAF) B-52H heavy bomber at Minot Air Force Base in North Dakota and transported to Barksdale Air Force Base in Louisiana. The nuclear warheads in the missiles were supposed to have been removed before the missiles were taken from their storage bunker. The missiles with the nuclear warheads were not reported missing and remained mounted to the aircraft at both Minot and Barksdale for 36 hours. During this period, the warheads were not protected by the various mandatory security precautions for nuclear weapons.

The program was first made public on December 16, 2017. The program began in 2007, with funding of $22 million over the five years until the available appropriations were ended in 2012. The program began in the U.S. Defense Intelligence Agency.
