Robert J. Beck (born 1961) is an educator and scholar of international law and international relations. [1]

Education

Born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and educated at Marquette University High School, Beck received an Honors B.A. (Political Science, History, Latin), Phi Beta Kappa, from Marquette University in 1983. He received MA (1985) and PhD (1989, with distinction) degrees in International Politics from Georgetown University's Department of Government. Beck also participated in law institutes at New York University's School of Law, the University of Virginia's School of Law, and Dartmouth College. [2]

Academic career

An Associate Professor of Political Science at the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee, [3] Beck also teaches in the Global Studies degree program.

From January 2014 until January 2023, Dr. Beck served as UWM's Associate Vice Chancellor and Chief Information Officer. From 2003-2013, he was Chief Information Officer of UWM's College of Letters and Science. From 2000 until July 2011 he served as Director of Academic Technology at UWM's Center for International Education. From 1998-2000, he served as Director of Tufts University's Center for Teaching Excellence. Beck earlier taught at the University of Virginia (Government & Foreign Affairs, 1989–90, 91-98) and the University of Minnesota (Political Science, 1990–91). [4]

Beck has been a regular scholarly collaborator with his long-time friend, Anthony Clark Arend. [5] Since 2003, he has also been a guest on the television series, "International Focus", produced by the Institute of World Affairs at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. [6] In addition, Dr. Beck has been featured in podcasts such as Georgetown University's “SFS ONLINE & ON TOPIC: Russia, Ukraine, and International Law,” with Dr. Anthony Clark Arend on March 18, 2022.

<i>UWM Post</i>

The UWM Post is a student newspaper independently run by the students of the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee. Published weekly in print from 1915 to 2012, it became independently operated in 1956. The newspaper published a new issue every Monday during the fall and spring semesters and was distributed both on campus and in the Greater Milwaukee metropolitan area.

The Institute for Law, Science and Global Security in the Department of Government at Georgetown University was established to promote teaching and research in the area of intersection between international law and international relations. The Institute sponsors undergraduate and graduate courses and runs a Master's Program in International Law and Global Security. The Institute seeks to inform the public policy debate about the nature, role and importance of international law as it connected to issues of science and global security. To this end, it sponsors a series of specific programs including the Program on Non-Proliferation Law and Policy, which is jointly run with the James Martin Center of the Monterey Institute of International Studies.

Anthony Clark Arend is Professor of Government and Foreign Service at Georgetown University. On June 1, 2020, he became Chair of the Department of Government. From August 1, 2015 until July 15, 2018, he served as Senior Associate Dean for Graduate and Faculty Affairs in the Walsh School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University. He served as Director of the Master of Science in Foreign Service Program at the Walsh School from 2008–2017. With Christopher C. Joyner, he founded the Institute for International Law and Politics at Georgetown University and served as co-director of the Institute from 2003–2008. He has also served as an adjunct professor of law at the Georgetown University Law Center. From 2005–2009, he edited the blog, Exploring International Law. His blog can now be found at the website AnthonyClarkArend.com He is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and is Chair of the Faculty Editorial Board of Georgetown University Press. In April 2017, Arend received the John Carroll Award from the Georgetown University Alumni Association.
