Robert Jones Atkinson (1820-1871) was a Democratic politician from the state of Ohio,United States. He was President of the Ohio Senate in 1854,and was an appointed official in the United States Department of the Treasury 1854 to 1864.
Robert Jones Atkinson was born in Carrollton,Ohio in 1820 [1] to Isaac and Hester (Jones) Atkinson. [2] He began as a clerk in Carrollton. [2] He was elected to the Ohio State Senate to serve a term starting in 1852. The legislature met for a session in 1852 and another in 1853. [3] He was re-elected,and served in the 1854 session. On January 2,1854,the Senate elected Atkinson as President pro tem over Wiliam Lawrence by vote of 22 to 7. [4] The Senate adjourned May 1,1854. [4]
In 1854,Atkinson was appointed Third Auditor of the United States Treasury. He assumed office August 28,1854 and was not replaced until July 18,1864. [1] [5] In 1866,Atkinson was appointed attorney and counselor to the United States Supreme Court. [1] He died in Washington in 1871. [1] [2]
Robert Atkinson married Matilda Jackson of Carrollton,Ohio. They had three sons and three daughters. Two sons were bankers in Montana,and the other worked at the United States Treasury. [2] Robert and Matilda Atkinson are buried at Grandview Cemetery in Carrollton,Ohio. He was a Democrat,a Freemason and a Presbyterian. [2]
Salmon Portland Chase was an American politician and jurist who served as the sixth chief justice of the United States from 1864 to his death in 1873. Chase served as the 23rd governor of Ohio from 1856 to 1860, represented Ohio in the United States Senate from 1849 to 1855 and again in 1861, and served as the 25th United States Secretary of the Treasury from 1861 to 1864 during the administration of Abraham Lincoln. Chase is therefore one of the few American politicians who have served in all three branches of the federal government, in addition to serving in the highest state-level office. Prior to his Supreme Court appointment, Chase was widely seen as a potential president.
William Windom was an American politician from Minnesota. He served as U.S. Representative from 1859 to 1869, and as U.S. Senator from 1870 to January 1871, from March 1871 to March 1881, and from November 1881 to 1883. He also served two non-consecutive times as Secretary of the Treasury from March to November 1881, and from 1889 to 1891, under three Presidents. He was a Republican. He was the great-grandfather of actor William Windom, who was named for him.
