Robert Kevin Ellis was a British-Australian millionaire businessman who was murdered in Bali in 2014. His wife later confessed to having organised his murder.

Life and career

Ellis spent his early life in Otara, New Zealand. He was raised there alongside his three siblings. [2] He later moved to Australia. He met Julaikah Noor Aini in 1986 and they were married in 1989. They had two children, in addition to the two children from Ellis' former marriage. [3]

The couple owned several businesses in Jakarta and Balo, including the telecommunications company PT Masindo Utama Nusantara and a diving company called Blue Fin. [1]

Murder

On 21 October 2014, Ellis' body was found wrapped in plastic and dumped in a ditch alongside a rice field. His throat had been slashed. [2]

Forensics searched the couple's villa and car, finding a small amount of blood. Police found Aini watching television, and she did not seem shocked when police notified her that her husband's body had been found. [1]

Aini confessed to organising the murder and hiring her maid's boyfriend Adrianus Ngongo to murder Ellis. [4] She claimed that he was killed because he kept her in a state of poverty and refused to give her more than a $19 per month allowance. [4] She also claimed that he had cheated on her [1] and withheld sex. [5]

Police arrested Adrianus Ngongo, who was carrying his share of the $A14,000 Aini had paid him and four accomplices for the murder. [6] Police also arrested two maids who had kept the family's pet dogs quiet during the murder, before helping to clean up and move the body. [7]

Aini was sentenced to 12 years in prison. [8] [9] Of the five men hired to commit the murder, three received 12-year prison sentences, and two received 15-year prison sentences. [10]

Since her arrest Corby has publicly maintained that the drugs were planted in her bodyboard bag and that she did not know about them. Her trial and conviction were a major focus of attention for the Australian media.

The Bali Nine were a group of nine Australians convicted for attempting to smuggle 8.3 kg (18 lb) of heroin out of Indonesia in April 2005. The heroin was valued at around A$4 million and was bound for Australia. Ringleaders Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran were sentenced to death and executed on 29 April 2015. Six other members, Si Yi Chen, Michael Czugaj, Tan Duc Thanh Nguyen, Matthew Norman, Scott Rush and Martin Stephens, were sentenced to life imprisonment and another, Renae Lawrence, to a 20-year sentence but was released after the sentence was commuted in November 2018. The Indonesian authorities reported on 5 June 2018 that Tan Duc Thanh Nguyen had died of stomach cancer.

In 2005, Sukumaran was arrested in a room at the Melasti Hotel in Kuta with eight others. Police found 334 g (11.8 oz) of heroin in a suitcase in the room. According to court testimonies of convicted drug mules, Sukumaran and Andrew Chan were the co-ringleaders of the heroin-smuggling operation from Indonesia to Australia. After a criminal trial, Sukumaran was sentenced on 14 February 2006 by the Denpasar District Court to execution by firing squad.

According to court testimonies of convicted drug mules, Chan and Myuran Sukumaran were the co-ringleaders of the heroin smuggling operation from Indonesia to Australia. After a criminal trial on 14 February 2006, Chan was sentenced to execution by firing squad by the Denpasar District Court.

Located 4 km away from the Canggu village, the prison opened in 1979 and was built to hold 300 inmates. As of 2017, the Kerobokan Prison contains over 1,400 male and female prisoners of various nationalities. More than 90% of the prisoners are Indonesian and 78% were convicted on drug charges. 15,000 rupiah ($1.08) per day is allocated for each prisoner.

Stacey Mitchell was a British-born girl living in Australia who was murdered at the age of 16, on 18 December 2006, by couple Jessica Stasinowsky and Valerie Parashumti. She was bludgeoned with a concrete block and strangled with a chain. Her corpse was found in a wheelie bin shortly afterwards. Stasinowsky and Parashumti had known Mitchell for three days, and claimed they murdered her because they found her irritating.

Occurring weeks after a high-profile manslaughter trial acquittal in the 2016 police killing of Philando Castile, also in the Minneapolis–Saint Paul metropolitan area, the shooting exacerbated existing tensions and attracted national and international press.

Donald Arthur Piper is an American murderer and suspected serial killer convicted of killing two women in hotels around West Des Moines and Clive, Iowa in 1993 and 1997, but is considered a suspect in four other killings. For his confirmed crimes, Piper was convicted and sentenced to two life terms.
