The European Women's Handball Championship is the official competition for senior women's national handball teams of Europe, and takes place every two years. In addition to crowning the European champions, the tournament also serves as a qualifying tournament for the Olympic Games and World Championship. As of December 2018, the only teams that have ever won the championship are Norway, Denmark, Hungary, Montenegro and France.

The club was founded in 1946 by a group of 26 people. Elverum has played in the finals in the Norwegian Handball Cup three times, and lost in all of them. The Norway national team coach, Christian Berge, was coach for Elverum Håndball from 2008-2014 which he had to leave in order to coach the Norway men’s national team.
Katja Johanna Alice Nyberg is a naturalized Norwegian handball player, currently retired. She played 99 games and scored 321 goals for the Norwegian national team during her career. With the Norwegian team she won a gold medal at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing and a silver medal at the 2007 World Women's Handball Championship in France, as well as two gold medals and one silver medal at the European Championships.

After her playing career she was head coach for the national team for two years, and later coach for various clubs. She was a Norway champion in discus throw three times.
