Roberto Javier Vega y Galina is a Mexican physician and labor leader who is the current secretary general of the National Social Security Workers Union (SNTSS). [1]
Vega y Galina studied medicine at the Universidad Autónoma de Puebla. He has occupied different positions in the National Social Security Workers Union (SNTSS) including secretary general. He was an active member of the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) and in 2003 gained a seat in the LIX Legislature of the Mexican Chamber of Deputies via proportional representation. Recently he lost a very important negotiation with the Mexican government about the retirement benefits of the social security union workers. He resigned from the PRI on March 28, 2006 after being denied another proportional representation seat.
In 2006 he unsuccessfully ran for a seat in the Senate of Mexico via proportional representation representing the Party of the Democratic Revolution (PRD).

In the Chamber of Deputies election, the Institutional Revolutionary Party won 195 of the 237 seats, as well as winning all 64 seats in the Senate election. Voter turnout was 64.6% in the Senate election and 62.0% in the Chamber election.

The LXIV Legislature of the Mexican Congress is the current meeting of the Mexican Congress of the Union that convened on 1 September 2018 and will end on 31 August 2021. It is composed of the 500 federal deputies and 128 senators elected in the 2018 Mexican general election. While the deputies will serve only in the LXIV Legislature, the senators, elected to six-year terms, will also form the Senate in the LXV Legislature, which will convene in 2021.
