His first major Grand Tour wins came at the 2017 Giro d'Italia. He is the brother of track cyclist Juliana Gaviria. His nickname is "Quetzal splendente", from the brightful and colourful South American bird Quetzal. Its colours recall his world championship titles, his Colombia and "la maglia Ciclamino" won at Giro d'Italia.

Finn Fisher-Black is a New Zealand professional racing cyclist, who currently rides for UCI WorldTeam UAE Team Emirates. He is the younger brother of fellow racing cyclist Niamh Fisher-Black.

This was the first Tour since 1989 in which each of the three podium finishers had made the podium on a previous occasion.
