The arrival of Christianity dates back to the 16th century by Portuguese missionaries such as Fr. Gonsalo Da Silveira of the Roman Catholic Church. The A9 Road is a national highway in Zimbabwe running from Mutare to Mbalabala. The road begins in Mutare and runs south-west through Nyanyadzi, Birchenough Bridge, Masvingo, Mashava, Zvishavane, Filabusi and ends at Mbalabala where it joins the (A6) Bulawayo-Beit Bridge Highway near the 61.5 km peg. It has a total of just less than 513 kilometres (319 mi), which is about a 6 hours 15 minute drive.

Rudolf Nyandoro is a Zimbabwean Roman Catholic prelate who served as the Bishop of Gokwe since 2017. He was appointed the new Bishop of Gweru in September 2020. A Gweru native, he previously served a parish priest, seminary rector and professor, and most recently, chancellor of the Diocese of Masvingo.

Tobias Wunganayi Chiginya was a Zimbabwean clergyman and bishop for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Gweru. He became ordained in 1966. He was appointed bishop in 1977. He died in 1987.

Martin Munyanyi was a Zimbabwean clergyman and bishop for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Gweru. He became ordained in 1983. He was appointed bishop in 2006. He resigned in 2012.
