Ron Suber is an American investor. He has held executive positions at Bear Stearns, Spectrum Global, Merlin Securities, Wells Fargo Securities, and Prosper Marketplace. He is also an investor in sixteen financial technology companies.

Ron Suber holds a BA in economics from the University of California, Berkeley. [1]

Career

Suber began working at Bear Stearns in 1992. [2] In 2006 Suber then joined Spectrum Global as president; the fund held $24 billion under management at that time. [2] In 2008, Suber began working at Merlin Securities in 2008, [3] where he was head of global sales. In 2012 he then moved to Wells Fargo, where he served as managing director of Wells Fargo Securities [4] following Wells Fargo's acquisition of Merlin. [5]

Suber served as the president of Prosper Marketplace, until taking the position of president emeritus. [6] He first joined the company in 2013 as an investor. [7] At Prosper, he provided an online lending platform for company founders looking for investment. [8] [9] In this role he has been referred to as a "fintech pioneer". [10] As an investor focusing on Fintech, Suber has invested in companies including DocuSign and SoFi, [11] and held investments in sixteen firms as of 2017. [12] Suber is also on the board of and vice chairman of the Australian Securities Exchange listed firm, Credible, [13] and the advisory boards of DocuSign, Juvo, Unison Home Ownership Investors, Money360, and eOriginal. [14]

He has also served as a financial commentator for CNBC, [15] and has spoken at events including the LendIt Conference. [8]

In October 2019, Suber joined the board of fintec startup Qwil [6] and in September 2020, he joined the board of directors of Yieldstreet. [16]

Peer-to-peer lending, also abbreviated as P2P lending, is the practice of lending money to individuals or businesses through online services that match lenders with borrowers. Peer-to-peer lending companies often offer their services online, and attempt to operate with lower overhead and provide their services more cheaply than traditional financial institutions. As a result, lenders can earn higher returns compared to savings and investment products offered by banks, while borrowers can borrow money at lower interest rates, even after the P2P lending company has taken a fee for providing the match-making platform and credit checking the borrower. There is the risk of the borrower defaulting on the loans taken out from peer-lending websites.

LendingClub is a financial services company headquartered in San Francisco, California. It was the first peer-to-peer lender to register its offerings as securities with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), and to offer loan trading on a secondary market. At its height, LendingClub was the world's largest peer-to-peer lending platform. The company reported that $15.98 billion in loans had been originated through its platform up to December 31, 2015.

Peerform is a peer-to-peer lending company based in New York City, which matches prime and near-prime qualified borrowers in the United States to accredited high net worth and institutional investors on its online platform. Its algorithm to determine loan eligibility focuses on a variety of factors including but not limited to FICO scores. In January 2011, Peerform raised $1.3 million during an angel funding round. In April 2014, Peerform raised $1.1 million in a seed funding round led by Corporest Development, a European investment firm.

Chris Larsen is an American business executive and angel investor best known for co-founding several Silicon Valley technology startups, including one based on peer to peer lending. In 1996, he co-founded the online mortgage lender E-Loan, and during his tenure as CEO E-Loan became the first company to freely provide consumers' FICO credit scores. By 2000, E-Loan's market value was estimated at $1 billion In 2005, Larsen left the company when it was sold to Banco Popular. In 2006, he co-founded Prosper Marketplace and he served as CEO until 2012. Later in 2012, he co-founded the company Ripple Labs, Inc., which developed Ripple, software that enables the instant and direct transfer of money between two parties.

LendingRobot is an automated investment service for Peer-to-peer lending for retail investors. It is based in Seattle, Washington, and was the first SEC-registered Investment Advisor in the Peer to Peer Lending industry.

Credible Labs Inc., commonly known as Credible, is a financial technology company headquartered in San Francisco. The company also does business through its subsidiary Credible Operations, Inc. Its online marketplace offers consumers the ability to compare and refinance loans, mortgages, and other financial products from lenders. Credible became a subsidiary of Fox Corporation in 2019. In December 2021, Credible acquired digital insurance platform Young Alfred, adding various kinds of insurance including home, auto, and pet to its platform.

John Witchel is an American entrepreneur, NCAA and Pac-10 swimming champion, two-time Pan American Games gold medal winner, and two-time Goodwill Games gold medal winner. He was the co-founder and CTO of Prosper Marketplace, America's first peer-to-peer lending marketplace, and the co-creator flash mob computing. He is the co-founder and current CEO of King Energy.
