Ross McNicol is an artist, curator and writer who lives and works in Margate and Sintra.
In 2007, with Ed Fornieles and Vanessa Carlos, [1] Ross McNicol started The Wallis Gallery in Hackney Wick, London, [2] where together they organised exhibitions and a performance night, Making Mistakes. [3]

The Citigroup Private Bank Australian Photographic Portrait Prize was a photographic art prize held at the Art Gallery of New South Wales in conjunction with the Archibald Prize, Wynne Prize and Sulman Prize. The winner received $15,000 to $20,000 and their work was automatically acquired for the Art Gallery's permanent collection. In its inaugural year in 2003 there were 560 entries received and 50 works exhibited. In 2005 entries rose to 657 and there were 49 works exhibited. The prize was discontinued in 2007.

William Nicol (1744–1797) was a Scottish schoolmaster, and, if ill-tempered and vain, one of Robert Burns's close friends. He was born in Annan parish at Dumbretton, Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland. Burns referred to him in one letter as "Kind hearted Willie" and he accompanied the poet on his August 1787 tour of the Highlands. Burns's third son, William Nicol, born at Ellisland Farm in 1791, was named after his friend, the poet commenting that his newborn son had "that propensity to witty wickedness and manfu' mischief, which even at twa days auld I foresaw would form the striking features of his disposition."
