The Goldman Environmental Prize is a prize awarded annually to grassroots environmental activists, one from each of the world's six geographic regions: Africa, Asia, Europe, Islands and Island Nations, North America, and South and Central America. The award is given by the Goldman Environmental Foundation headquartered in San Francisco, California. It is also called the Green Nobel.
Von Hernandez is a leading environmental activist from the Philippines. He was Executive Director of Greenpeace Southeast Asia (GPSEA) from 2008-2014, where he led the environmental group’s programs and operations in the Southeast Asian region. Prior to that, he served as Campaigns Director for the organization, and was responsible for driving the group’s campaigns in Thailand, Indonesia and the Philippines on a number of issues including climate change, forests, sustainable agriculture and toxics pollution. Currently, he serves as Development Director for Greenpeace International.
Yu Xiaogang is a Chinese environmentalist. He was awarded the Goldman Environmental Prize in 2006 for his efforts in "creating groundbreaking watershed management programs while researching and documenting the socioeconomic impact dams had on local Chinese communities". He is among the six winners of the 2009 Ramon Magsaysay Awards, considered by many to be the Asian equivalent of the Nobel prize. Isidro Baldenegro López was a farmer and community leader of Mexico's indigenous Tarahumara people in Sierra Madre and an environmental activist who fought against unregulated logging in his region.
Eugène Rutagarama is an environmentalist from Rwanda. He was awarded the Goldman Environmental Prize in 2001, for his efforts on saving the population of mountain gorillas in the Volcanoes National Park in the Virungas mountains, during the war and recent conflicts in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Sarah Agnes James is a native Neets'aii Gwich'in from Arctic Village, Alaska, USA, and a board member of the International Indian Treaty Council. They received the prize for their struggles for protection of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) from plans of oil exploration and drilling. Eileen Kampakuta Brown is an Aboriginal elder from Australia. She was awarded the Goldman Environmental Prize in 2003 together with Eileen Wani Wingfield, for their efforts to stop governmental plans for a nuclear waste dump in South Australia's desert land, and for protection of their land and culture.
Alexis Massol González is a civil engineer and environmentalist from Puerto Rico. Graduated in civil engineering in 1965 from the University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez. He was awarded the Goldman Environmental Prize in 2002 for his efforts on the protection of Puerto Rico's mountain forests due to threats from mining interests. The forest reserve Bosque del Pueblo was established in 1996.
Nat Quansah is a botanist from Ghana, and earned a doctorate in philosophy in pteridology from the University of London, Goldsmiths College. He received a masters in botany at the University of Cape Coast, Ghana. He has taught courses on ethnobotany at the University of Antananarivo. Since 2008 he has served as the academic director for the Madagascar: Traditional Medicine and healthcare Systems summer program. From 2013-14, he served as academic director for the School for International Training (SIT) program Tanzania: Zanzibar — Coastal Ecology and Natural Resource Management.
Richard N. Goldman was an American billionaire philanthropist who was the co-founder of the Goldman Environmental Prize in 1990 with his wife, Rhoda Goldman. He founded the insurance company Goldman Insurance and Risk Management, and with his wife he established the Richard and Rhoda Goldman Fund in 1951.

Ramesh Agrawal is an Indian social worker, internet café owner and grassroots environmentalist from Chhattisgarh. He was awarded the Goldman Environmental Prize in 2014 for his efforts in organizing protests against certain industrialization plans in the region, and in particular informing citizens about environmental and social consequences of projected large-scale coal mining.
