In 2014, twenty-five war veterans at Roxbury took part in the nationally recognized POW/MIA recognition day. [1]

In 2015, Darryl Strawberry gave a motivational speech to inmates at Roxbury. [2] Inmates at Roxbury take care of animals through a program that also benefits the inmates. [3]

Notable incidents

While a Roxbury guard, Jeffrey Wroten, was guarding an inmate at a local hospital, the inmate shot and killed Wroten. [4]

Two former guards were sentenced to prison in federal court for assaulting an inmate. [5]

He was sentenced to death for this murder and executed in 1997.

Melvin Douglas "Little Melvin" Williams was an African-American actor, author, entrepreneur, public speaker, educator, community activist, gambler and reformed drug trafficker. Considered a drug kingpin in the 1960s, Williams was known for trafficking heroin in Baltimore before he was sentenced to prison in 1985. After his release he began working as a community activist to help reform the lives of underprivileged minorities and youth. He later appeared as “The Deacon” in the HBO series The Wire and served as an inspiration for the show.

Morgan County Correctional Complex (MCCX) is a maximum security prison in unincorporated Morgan County, near Wartburg, Tennessee, operated by the Tennessee Department of Correction. It opened in 1980. An expansion completed in 2009 increased its capacity to 2,500 prisoners. The prison is accredited by the American Correctional Association. The current warden is Mike Parris.
