Royal Franklin Netzer was an academic administrator who served as the 4th President of the State University of New York at Oneonta from 1951 to 1970.
Prior to becoming the head of SUNY Oneonta,Netzer was a dean at the school now known as SUNY Geneseo from 1939 until he was appointed the president of SUNY Oneonta in 1951. He was selected to serve in the position following Charles W. Hunt reaching the age of 70,which triggered his mandatory retirement. Netzer assumed his position on February 1,1951. [1] He retired in 1970,and was succeeded by Clifford Craven. [2]

Oneonta is a city in southern Otsego County,New York,United States. It is one of the northernmost cities of the Appalachian Region. Oneonta is home to the State University of New York at Oneonta and Hartwick College. SUNY Oneonta began as a normal school and a teacher's college in 1889,and Hartwick College moved into the city in 1928. The approximately 5,800 students from SUNY Oneonta and the approximately 1,500 students at Hartwick make up a significant percentage of the population of Oneonta. According to the 2020 U.S. Census,Oneonta had a population of 13,079. Its nickname is "City of the Hills." While the word "oneonta" is of undetermined origin,it is popularly believed to mean "place of open rocks" in the Mohawk language. This refers to a prominent geological formation known as "Table Rock" at the western end of the city.

Charles Wesley Hunt (1880-1973) was an American educator and academic administrator. He served as the 3rd President of the State University of New York at Oneonta. During his tenure as president,the college transitioned from being known as Oneonta State Normal School to Oneonta State Teachers College. The Hunt Union building on the SUNY Oneonta is named in his honor,as well as some of the school-sponsored comedy events being called "Chuck's Comedy Club".
