The Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research, also known as NIOZ, in Dutch the Nederlands Instituut voor Onderzoek der Zee, is the Dutch national oceanographic institute. It is located on the island of Texel, and in Yerseke, in the Netherlands. The institute was founded in 1876 as the Zoological Station and in 1960 it was renamed to its current name. [1] NIOZ carries out marine research in the waters of the Netherlands and overseas; it also plays a role in educating students, and it offers research facilities to marine scientists from the Netherlands and other countries worldwide. NIOZ has a longstanding collaboration with Utrecht University, for instance in an interdisciplinary Master’s programme Marine Sciences. [2] [3] NIOZ is part of the institutes organization of the Dutch Research Council (NWO). [4]

Wim Mook was director of the institute from 1990 to 1996. Henk Brinkhuis was director from October 2011 [5] until 1 November 2021, when he was succeeded by Han Dolman. [6] In 2022, NIOZ had 337 employees. [7]

Fleet

The National Marine Facilities (NMF), a division of NIOZ, operates three research vessels, each with their specific area of operation. These vessels are the RV Pelagia, the RV Navicula and the RV Adriaen Coenen which replaced the RV Stern on 1 August 2022. [8] [9] The RV Navicula is scheduled to be replaced by the RV Wim Wolff in 2023. [10] [11] The RV Pelagia is also due to be replaced but on 14 April 2022 a Dutch court ruled that the original contract must be amended, [12] resulting in a delay of the final tender for the RV Anna Weber-van Bosse. [13]

He studied business and information technology at the Hogeschool Utrecht, was a consultant at various firms in his home country, was a research analyst and held executive positions in various large, medium and small software companies. He has a background in business intelligence, corporate performance management and business process management. Buytendijk is also a visiting fellow at Cranfield University School of Management. In 2012, he was appointed fellow at The Data Warehousing Institute (TDWI). Currently, Buytendijk is a research vice president at analyst firm Gartner, where he served before as well between 2001 and 2006.

RV <i>Pelagia</i>


RV Pelagia is a research vessel in the service of the Royal Netherlands Institute of Sea Research (NIOZ), a research institute of the Dutch Research Council (NWO). It was built in 1991 by Verolme Shipyard in Heusden, The Netherlands, and has been in NIOZ-service since. The RV Pelagia is due to be replaced but on 14 April 2022 a Dutch court ruled that the original contract must be amended, resulting in a delay of the final tender for the replacement that will bear the name RV Anna Weber-van Bosse, after the Netherlands' first female marine biologist to conduct research at sea.

Coenen is a Dutch patronymic surname meaning "son of Coen" (Conrad). It is particularly common in Dutch and Belgian Limburg. Variant spellings are Coene, Koenen and Koene. Though probably with the same origin, the names "de Coene" and "de Koene" can be interpreted as meaning "the brave".

Hebe Charlotte Kohlbrugge was a Dutch Protestant theologian and Second World War resistance member. She was a member of the anti-Nazi Confessing Church for eleven months and assisted the reverend Günther Harder in Fehrbellin. Kohlbrugge was involved in spiritual resistance against Nazi Germany through the secret distribution of a pamphlet in the Netherlands and Switzerland during the Second World War. After the war, she worked as the secretary of the Germany Commission in the Council for Church and Government of the Dutch Reformed Church in 1947, holding responsibility for restoring ties with churches alongside Arend van Leeuwen in the Soviet-occupied East Germany and other Iron Curtain nations until 1989. Kohlbrugge gave students post-war ideology and enable Dutch students understand socialist ideals, sending theology students to Central Eastern Europe nations and more than 80 Dutch students spent one or two years studying. She was a recipient of the Bronze Lion and the American Medal of Freedom with the Silver Palm.
