Ruby Zarriga

Ruby Zarriga is a retired civil servant from Papua New Guinea. [1]

She was born in New Hanover, in the New Ireland Province. She completed a bachelor of arts degree in social work from the University of Papua New Guinea in 1987, and on graduating joined the public service. [1] She worked in a variety of government agencies covering welfare, community planning and training. [2] In 2004 she received an Australian Development Scholarship and in 2005 and 2006 she studied at the Australian National University in Canberra, Australia. She completed a master's degree in management and returned to Papua New Guinea to the Department of National Planning and Monitoring. She was appointed First Assistant Secretary, Sectoral Planning and Programming Division. [1]

In September 2011, Zarriga was arrested and charged with conspiracy to defraud the State. [3] The arrest was in relation to a K10 million grant that was paid by the Department of National Planning to Kokopo businessman, Eremas Wartoto, to set up an airline, at the time that Zarriga was acting secretary. [4]

Zarriga retired in 2021 after working in the Department of National Planning and Monitoring for 32 years. [2]

Personal life

Zarriga was married to Reverend Megghen Zarriga, who was shot and killed in 2002. The couple had two daughters together. [2]

Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people in Papua New Guinea face legal challenges not experienced by non-LGBT residents. Male same-sex sexual activity is illegal, punishable by up to 14 years' imprisonment. The law is rarely enforced, but arrests still do happen, having occurred in 2015 and 2022. There are no legal restrictions against lesbian sex in the country.

James Marape is a Papua New Guinean politician who has served as the prime minister of Papua New Guinea since May 2019. He has been a member of the National Parliament of Papua New Guinea since July 2007, representing the electorate of Tari-Pori Open in Hela Province in the New Guinea Highlands. He has held Cabinet Posts as Minister of Education (2008–2011), Minister of Finance (2012–2019), and Minister of Foreign Affairs (2023–present). Marape entered the 2022 elections under the banner of the Pangu Party and won the most seats, while still being far from a majority. He was therefore able to form government, which was elected unopposed by the new parliament.

Bryan Jared Kramer is a Papua New Guinea politician and Member of the 10th and 11th Parliament of Papua New Guinea. Formerly a member of the Pangu Party, he founded the Allegiance Party, of which he was the sole MP, in 2018. He ran nine candidates in the 2022 National Elections, including one in each of Madang's seven electorates. Kramer was returned with a sizeable majority, but was unsuccessful in securing the election of another Party member. He was suspended from office on 30 September 2022 pending the outcomes of a leadership tribunal. On Tuesday 28 February 2023 the three-man bench unanimously found Kramer guilty of seven counts against him. A three-man bench recommended dismissal for two counts of "scandalising the judiciary" and fines totalling K10,000 (USD3,000) for five counts related to use of district funds. Kramer was dismissed from office by the Governor General on 24 May 2023. He will not be able to re-contest an election for five years, allowing him to compete in the 2032 election. A by-election for Madang Open will be held in 2024.

Dr. Rona Nibeta Nadile worked for the Department of Labour and Industrial Relations (DLIR) of Papua New Guinea (PNG), with a focus on legal frameworks for managing foreign workers. In 2009 the Westpac Women in Business Awards recognized her contributions with the Cardno Acil Public Sector Award. A few years later, she was dismissed after twice exposing political corruption within the national government.

The 2021 Papua New Guinea National Soccer League, for sponsorship reasons also known as the Kumul Petroleum Holdings Limited National Soccer League, is the 15th edition of the Papua New Guinea National Soccer League, the top-tier football league in Papua New Guinea. The league started on 24 July.
