RuckusRoots is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization which brings sustainable art education programs to teens and young adults. It is centered in Los Angeles, California and was founded in 2009 [1] by University of Colorado Boulder graduate Christine Spehar. [2] The aim of the organization is to help young people see art as a tool for eco- activism and to take a part in building a sustainable future. [3]

RuckusRoots' fundamental approach is to provide collaborative, hands-on experience to young people and their surrounding community. RuckusRoots teams up with artists and organizations to use "found object art" to promote sustainable living. Its programs are funded through sponsorship, donations, volunteer efforts, and fundraising events.

In 2012 they teamed up with Marina DeBris to produce a Trashion show to benefit arts education for low income teens in East LA. [4] In 2010, Ruckus Roots partnered with the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh to develop TrashFormation, an event to educate about art sustainability, a program that has since been repeated successfully in Los Angeles area schools. [5] [6] The UW Oshkosh and Ruckus Roots also teamed up for an Earth Week event demonstrating the benefits of bicycling. [7] Another typical activity for Ruckus Roots is participating in trash education video events. [8]

Trashion is a term for art, jewellery, fashion and objects for the home created from used, thrown-out, found and repurposed elements. The term was first coined in New Zealand in 2004 and gained in usage through 2005. Trashion is a subgenre of found object art, which is basically using objects that already have some other defined purpose, and turning it into art. In this case, trash is used.

The Wisconsin–Whitewater Warhawks football program is the intercollegiate American football team for the University of Wisconsin–Whitewater located in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. The team competes in the NCAA Division III and are members of the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Wisconsin–Whitewater's first football team was fielded in 1889. The team plays its home games at the 13,500 seat Perkins Stadium in Whitewater, Wisconsin. The Warhawks are coached by Kevin Bullis.

Marina DeBris Pseudonymous Australian artist who works with trash from oceans and beaches

Marina DeBris is the name used by an Australian-based artist whose work focuses on reusing trash to raise awareness of ocean and beach pollution. DeBris uses trash washed up from the beach to create trashion, 'fish tanks', decorative art and other works of art. She has also used beach trash to provide one perspective on what the earth might look like from space. As well as creating art from debris, DeBris also is a fund raiser for environmental organizations, and collaborates with non-profit organizations and schools to educate children about ocean pollution. In 2021, DeBris found almost 300 face masks on beaches, and used them in her trashion and other displays.

Tim Scott Jorgensen is an American former professional baseball player and high school baseball coach. As a college baseball player for the University of Wisconsin–Oshkosh, Jorgensen set Division III all-time records for most home runs in a single season and for most career home runs. He played professional baseball until 1999 and was later inducted into the National College Baseball Hall of Fame.

In an effort to create a more sustainable environment, Clemson University, located in Clemson, South Carolina, has developed several initiatives to conserve energy and educate students along with the public about fossil fuels and natural resources. Clemson has set both short- and long-term goals, on a scale of up to 15 years. Known as the Solid Green campaign, Clemson has a mission to reduce total energy used by 20% in the year 2020, reach a goal of becoming net-zero in carbon emissions, and replace the coal-fired boiler in 2015. Clemson has the long-term desire to become much more energy efficient, climate considerate and recycle more. One way of funding these initiatives is the Student Sustainability Fee, also known as the Green Fee, which students can elect to pay $10 with their tuition each semester.
