History
The current incarnation of this publication is a merger of two previously existing titles, 'Rugby Leaguer' which can trace its origins back to the 1940s, and 'League Express', which first appeared on Monday 10 September 1990.
League Express
In 1990, Martyn Sadler (chairman) and Tim Butcher (managing director) believed that limited coverage of rugby league every Monday morning in the national newspapers had opened a niche market for a specialist rugby league newspaper to be published every Monday. The very first edition of League Express, edited by Mike Rylance, appeared on 10 September 1990. The first six editions of League Express were printed by the Yorkshire Weekly Newspaper Group at their Wakefield printing press, before production was transferred to Bradford, to the Telegraph and Argus press.
At the start of the 1993/94 season Martyn Sadler became the managing editor of League Express. LPL decided to expand its production with a new title – League Express Weekend – edited by Tim Butcher and published each Friday during the season. In the years that followed, the Friday newspaper changed its title to Rugby League Weekend, Super League Week, and then Total Rugby League.
At the end of the 2000 season League Publications Limited decided to convert its Total Rugby League newspaper into an online publication, TotalRL.com, which launched on 1 March 2001 and became one of the world's most popular rugby league sites.
Rugby Leaguer & League Express
In May 2002, League Publications Limited acquired the 'Rugby Leaguer' newspaper and merged it with League Express to create Rugby Leaguer & League Express.
In 2008, the Albert Goldthorpe Medal, named after Albert Goldthorpe, was created by the newspaper to honour the leading players in the Super League.

Scotsport was a Scottish sports television programme, broadcast on STV in northern and central Scotland between 1957 and 2008, as well as on ITV Border in southern Scotland.
The Championship, known as the Betfred Championship for sponsorship reasons, is a professional rugby league competition. It is the second-tier competition organised by the Rugby Football League, the governing body for the sport in England, and consists of 14 teams, with promotion to the Super League and relegation to the third-tier competition, League 1. The league announced a two-year sponsorship deal with the bookmaking company Betfred ahead of the 2018 season. The current champions are Toulouse Olympique, winners of the 2021 season after beating Featherstone Rovers in the Million Pound Game to win promotion to Super League 2022.

Albert Edward Goldthorpe was an English rugby footballer from the period around 1895's schism in English rugby, which led to the formation of rugby league football around the turn of the century.
The Albert Goldthorpe Medal is an award that has been created by Rugby Leaguer & League Express to honour the leading players in the Super League and to honour Albert Goldthorpe, who was English rugby league's first superstar at the turn of the 20th century.
Luke Gale is an English professional rugby league footballer who plays as scrum-half or stand-off for Hull FC in the Betfred Super League and the England Knights and England at international level.
Dane Manning is a professional rugby league footballer who plays as a second-row forward for the Batley Bulldogs in the Betfred Championship.
The 2017 Super League season, known as the Betfred Super League XXII for sponsorship reasons, was the 22nd season of the Super League and 123rd season of rugby league in Britain. Twelve teams competed over 23 rounds, including the Magic Weekend, which took place at St James' Park, Newcastle upon Tyne, after which the eight highest entered the Super League play-offs for a place in the Super League Grand Final. The four lowest teams then entered the qualifying play-offs, along with the four highest teams from the Championship, to determine which teams will play again in Super League XXIII.
Super League XXIII commenced on 1 February 2018, and ended on 13 October. It consisted of 23 regular season games, and 7 rounds of relevant play-offs, which included the Grand Final at Old Trafford.
The 2018 Rugby Football League Championship is a rugby league football competition played primarily in the United Kingdom, one tier below the first tier Super League. The 2018 season is the fourth to consist of the Super 8s structure combining the Championship and Super League three-quarters of the way through the season.

Super League XXVI was the 2021 season of Super League, and 126th season of rugby league in Great Britain. The season started on 26 March 2021, with all six fixtures taking place behind closed doors, at Headingley. It was originally scheduled to have consisted of 27 regular season games, but changes introduced during the season shortened the competition to 25 rounds and subseuent play-offs. The season finale, the Grand Final, took place at Old Trafford, on 9 October 2021.

The Rugby Football League (RFL) 2021 Championship comprised 22-rounds in the regular season with a four-round play-off post-season contested by the top six clubs to determine which club would be promoted to the 2022 Super League.
The 2021 RFL 1895 Cup, known as the 2021 AB Sundecks 1895 Cup for sponsorship reasons, is the second playing of the RFL 1895 Cup, a rugby league football competition for clubs in the United Kingdom. The competition is for the professional clubs who play in the Championship and League 1 and was played between March and July 2021.
The 2022 Challenge Cup, known for sponsorship reasons as the 2022 Betfred Challenge Cup, will be the 121st edition of the Challenge Cup, the main rugby league knockout cup tournament in British rugby league run by the Rugby Football League (RFL). It will start on 15 January 2022 and culminate with the final at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on 28 May.
