Rupert Marshall-Luck (born Rupert Luck) is a British violinist and musicologist.
After reading Music at Cambridge University, he was awarded a postgraduate scholarship to continue his studies with the eminent pedagogue Simon Fischer and thereafter won a Distinction for his degree of Master of Music. [1] He now appears as soloist and recitalist at major festivals and venues throughout the UK as well as in France, Germany, the Netherlands, the Republic of Ireland, Switzerland and the USA. He is married to Em Marshall-Luck, the organiser of the English Music Festival.
Marshall-Luck has made several recordings with the pianist Matthew Rickard of works by British composers for the label EM Records, his discs including World Première recordings of compositions written during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries and which, in many cases, he has himself edited for performance (see also Musicology). [2] These recordings have attracted much critical acclaim: his CDs of Violin Sonatas by Bliss, Walford Davies and York Bowen (EMR CD001) and of works for violin and piano by Elgar, Gurney and Sainsbury (EMR CD006) were both named as ‘Recordings of the Month’ by MusicWeb International; [3] [4] EMR CD001 was also commended by BBC Music Magazine: “Besides bombproof tuning and serious reserves of firepower, [Marshall-Luck’s] musicianship offers full-throated, gloss-free fullness of tone which would impress in any context”. [5] His recording of Vaughan Williams’s Violin Sonata, Holst’s Five Pieces and Walford Davies’s Violin Sonata in E-flat was hailed by The Strad for its “deeply committed and discriminating performances... Marshall-Luck’s ability to spin cantabile lines with the subtlest of inflections pays dividends.”; [6] whilst ‘Fanfare’ stated: “Marshall-Luck’s technique and intonation are flawless... each work is projected with knowing sensitivity and communicative expression.” [7]
He has also recorded a conspectus of the chamber music of John Pickard for Toccata Classics (TOCC 0150), which has also been well-received, International Record Review stating that “Rupert Marshall-Luck... proves as adept in an overtly contemporary idiom as in those of the early twentieth century with which he is most associated”; [8] and Fanfare highlighting it as “a compact disc not to be missed”. [9]
Over the past few years, Marshall-Luck has been active as an editor and writer and has been responsible for editing from the composers' autographs several works that he has included in his recital programmes and recordings; some of these, such as the Violin Sonata in A major by Henry Walford Davies, the Five Pieces for Violin and Piano by Gustav Holst, and the Sonata for Violin and Piano in E-flat major by Ivor Gurney, have been published by EM Publishing. [10] He has also worked with G. Henle Verlag of Munich on a new scholarly-critical edition of Elgar's popular salon piece Salut d'Amour; his article exploring the notation of the work's sources and its implication upon the performance of the piece was circulated by the publishing house on its website in 2013. Sir Henry Walford Davies was an English composer, organist, and educator who held the title Master of the King's Music from 1934 until 1941. He served with the Royal Air Force during the First World War, during which he composed the Royal Air Force March Past, and was music adviser to the British Broadcasting Corporation, for whom he gave commended talks on music between 1924 and 1941.

Ivor Bertie Gurney was an English poet and composer, particularly of songs. He was born and raised in Gloucester. He suffered from bipolar disorder through much of his life and spent his last 15 years in psychiatric hospitals. Critical evaluation of Gurney has been complicated by this, and also by the need to assess both his poetry and his music. Gurney himself thought of music as his true vocation: "The brighter visions brought music; the fainter verse".
The Cello Sonata No. 3 in A major, Op. 69, is the third of five cello sonatas by Ludwig van Beethoven. He composed it in 1807–08, during his productive middle period. It was first performed in 1809 by cellist Nikolaus Kraft and pianist Dorothea von Ertmann, a student of Beethoven. Published by Breitkopf & Härtel the same year, it was dedicated to Freiherr Ignaz von Gleichenstein, Beethoven's friend and an amateur cellist. The sonata was successful with audiences from the beginning.
Herbert Whitton Sumsion was an English musician who was organist of Gloucester Cathedral from 1928 to 1967. Through his leadership role with the Three Choirs Festival, Sumsion maintained close associations with major figures in England's 20th-century musical renaissance, including Edward Elgar, Herbert Howells, Gerald Finzi, and Ralph Vaughan Williams. Although Sumsion is known primarily as a cathedral musician, his professional career spanned more than 60 years and encompassed composing, conducting, performing, accompanying, and teaching. His compositions include works for choir and organ, as well as lesser-known chamber and orchestral works.
Howard David Blake is an English composer, conductor, and pianist whose career has spanned more than 50 years and produced more than 650 works. Blake's most successful work is his soundtrack for Channel 4’s 1982 film The Snowman, which includes the song "Walking in the Air". He is increasingly recognised for his classical works including concertos, oratorios, ballets, operas and many instrumental pieces.
Duncan Honeybourne is an English pianist, teacher and lecturer.
William Henry Reed MVO was an English violinist, teacher, composer, conductor and biographer of Edward Elgar. He was leader of the London Symphony Orchestra for 23 years (1912–1935), but is best known for his long personal friendship with Elgar (1910–1934) and his book Elgar As I Knew Him (1936), in which he goes into great detail about the genesis of the Violin Concerto in B minor.
Charles William Eric Fogg was an English composer, conductor and BBC broadcaster. His early works were influenced by Igor Stravinsky, though his later pieces owe more to Granville Bantock and Richard Strauss and even William Walton. Much of his music has been lost.
Robert Kulek is an American classical pianist. He is of Latvian ancestry and currently resides in the Netherlands. He has recorded for multiple labels including EMI and Pentatone, and his recording of French sonatas was nominated for the Edison Award.

He read music at the University of Durham, studying composition with John Casken and again at Postgraduate level with Casken at the University of Manchester. Jennings has additionally benefited from regular consultations with Arthur Butterworth. Jennings' compositions employ a style that combines romanticism with more recent musical developments. His music is known to have been inspired by the works of poets and visual artists, especially English watercolourists from the early 1800s.

His recording of the complete piano works by Max Reger earned him awards. He is also a jazz pianist, and has been professor of piano and chamber music at the Hochschule für Musik, Theater und Medien Hannover since 1993.
