Rykko Bellemare (born 1991) is a Native Canadian film actor, best known for his lead role as Shawnouk in Before the Streets (Avant les rues). [2] He won the Prix Iris for Revelation of the Year, its award for debut performances, at the 19th Quebec Cinema Awards for his work in the film. [3]

A member of the Atikamekw nation from Wemotaci, Quebec, [1] he is the brother of Kwena Bellemare-Boivin, who played his character's sister in the film. [4] He is a dancer, drummer and singer with the Atikamekw traditional music group Northern Voice. [4]

The Atikamekw are the Indigenous inhabitants of the subnational country or territory they call Nitaskinan, in the upper Saint-Maurice River valley of Quebec, Canada. Their current population is around 8,000. One of the main communities is Manawan, about 160 kilometres (99 mi) northeast of Montreal. They have a tradition of agriculture as well as fishing, hunting and gathering. They have close traditional ties with the Innu people, who were their historical allies against the Inuit.

Before the Streets is a 2016 Canadian drama film directed by Chloé Leriche. Set among the Atikamekw people of northern Quebec, the film stars Rykko Bellemare as Shawnouk, a man undertaking the process of restorative justice after accidentally killing someone in the process of committing a crime.

Kwena Bellemare-Boivin is an Indigenous film actress, who garnered a nomination for Best Supporting Actress at the 5th Canadian Screen Awards for her performance in Before the Streets .

Jacques Newashish (1958) is a Canadian film actor, filmmaker, painter, and sculptor. Newashish is a member of the Atikamekw nation and is from Wemotaci, Quebec. He was born in La Tuque, Quebec where he learned traditional values and ways of living. His father was a trapper and hunter and the language and culture of the Atikamekw people. Newashish incorporates elements of Atikamekw culture into his artistic practice and is concerned with the preservation of the Atikamekw language and culture in the community.

Chloé Leriche is a Canadian film director from Montreal, Quebec. Her debut feature film, Before the Streets , received six Canadian Screen Award nominations at the 5th Canadian Screen Awards in 2017, including Best Picture and a nod for Leriche as Best Director.

Sylvain Bellemare is a Canadian sound editor and sound designer, best known internationally as the supervising sound editor of Arrival (2016), for which he won the BAFTA Award for Best Sound and the Academy Award for Best Sound Editing. He is also known for Soft Shell Man (2001), It's Not Me, I Swear! (2008), Incendies (2010), Monsieur Lazhar (2011), Gabrielle (2013) and Endorphine (2015). Constant Awashish is an Atikamekw chief. Since 2014, he is the Grand Chief of the Conseil de la Nation Atikamekw, the tribal council uniting the three Atikamekw Nations. He is known to have declared the sovereignty on their ancestral territory, the Nitaskinan, with the other Atikamekw chiefs.

Atikamekw Suns is a Canadian drama film, directed by Chloé Leriche and slated to premiere in 2023. The film centres on the true story of five youths from the Atikamekw First Nation community of Manawan who were found dead in a truck in the nearby river in 1977, with police investigation remaining inconclusive to this day about whether the truck driving into the river was a simple accident or a racially-motivated attack.
