The SPL Karjalan piiri(Karelia Football Association) is a former district organisation of the Football Association of Finland. It administered football in the North Karelia area. [1]

The District Football Associations are the local governing bodies of association football in Finland. The 12 District FAs exist to govern all aspects of local football in their defined areas, providing grassroots support to the Finnish Football Association by promoting and administering football and futsal in their respective districts. The District FAs administer youth football and the lower tier leagues covering Kolmonen and the lower divisions.

Background

Suomen Palloliitto Karjalan piiri, commonly referred to as SPL Karjalan piiri or SPL Karjala, was the governing body for football in the North Karelia area. The organisation was founded in May 1930 and was based in Sortavala. [1] It is not clear when the association ceased operating but it is known that 4 clubs broke away from their own area to form the SPL Joensuun piiri on 18 December 1938. [2]

Joensuun Palloseura

Joensuun Palloseura is a football club from Joensuu, Finland. JoPS is Joensuu's oldest football club having been formed in 1929. The club has competed in the second tier of Finnish football over 6 seasons, the last time being in 1968. JoPS currently plays in the Kolmonen section that covers Eastern and Central Finland.

Tuusulan Palloseura

Tuusulan Palloseura is a sports club from Tuusula in Finland. The club was formed in 1971 and their home ground is at the Tuusulan urheilukeskus. The men's football first team currently plays in the Kolmonen while the ladies team plays in Section A of the Kakkonen. The Chairman of TuPS is Jari Klemetti. In addition to football the club has been active in ice-hockey and ringette.

Nelonen or IV divisioona is the fifth level in the Finnish football league system and comprises 159 teams. The IV divisioona was introduced in 1973 and in the mid-1990s became known as the Nelonen.

Seiska or VII divisioona is the eighth level in the Finnish football league system and comprises 30 teams. The VII divisioona was introduced in 1973 and in the mid-1990s became known as the Seiska. In theory, Seiska is the last league in Finland where a club can go all the way and become Veikkausliiga champions.

The Suomen Palloliiton Saimaan piiri(SPL Saimaa district) was a district organisation of the Football Association of Finland operating from 1924 to 1994. Until the Second World War the district was known as the Suomen Palloliiton Viipurin piiri . It administered football and bandy initially in and around Viipuri, later expanding to cover the southern part of the historical Finnish Karelia, and ultimately in the Lake Saimaa area. Currently it's part of the Suomen Palloliiton Kaakkois-Suomen piiri.
