The Sacramento State Hornets men's basketball team is the basketball team that represents California State University, Sacramento in Sacramento, California. [2] Members of the Big Sky Conference since 1996, the Hornets have yet to play in the NCAA Division I Tournament or the National Invitation Tournament (NIT). They are currently coached by David Patrick, who took over in 2022. [3]

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Jim Calhoun</span> American basketball player and coach

James A. Calhoun is a retired college basketball coach. He is best known for his tenure as head coach of the University of Connecticut (UConn) men's basketball team. His teams won three NCAA national championships, played in four Final Fours, won the 1988 NIT title, and won seven Big East tournament championships. With his team's 2011 NCAA title win, the 68-year-old Calhoun became the oldest coach to win a Division I men's basketball title. He won his 800th game in 2009 and finished his NCAA Division I career with 873 victories, ranking 11th all-time as of February 2019. From 2018–21, he served as head coach of the University of Saint Joseph men's basketball team. Calhoun is one of only six coaches in NCAA Division I history to win three or more championships, and he is widely considered one of the greatest coaches of all time. In 2005, he was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame.

The Hornets Nest is a 1,012-seat multi-purpose gymnasium at California State University, Sacramento in Sacramento, California. The arena opened in 1955, and is one of the oldest in D-I sports. It is home to the Sacramento State Hornets men's basketball, women's basketball, and women's volleyball teams.

Everett F. Shelton was an American basketball coach in the 1940s and 1950s. Shelton played quarterback for the Phillips University football team. The Cunningham, Kansas native coached 46 years at the high school, college and Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) levels and compiled an 850–437 record. He is mostly known for coaching the Wyoming Cowboys men's basketball team from 1939 to 1959. While at Wyoming, Shelton had a record of 328 wins and 201 losses for a .620 winning percentage. He guided the Cowboys to eight Mountain States / Skyline Conference championships and seven NCAA Tournament appearances. During his career, he was President of the National Association of Basketball Coaches. He was elected to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1980.

The New Mexico State Aggies men's basketball team represents New Mexico State University in Las Cruces, New Mexico. Founded in 1904, the Aggies completed an 18-season tenure in the Western Athletic Conference in 2023, and will join Conference USA on July 1, 2023. The California Baptist Lancers men's basketball team represents California Baptist University in the Western Athletic Conference. The team made the jump into Division I basketball on July 1, 2018. They are currently led by head coach Rick Croy and play at the CBU Events Center, which opened in 2017 and replaced the Van Dyne Gym. The men's basketball program will be ineligible for play in the NCAA Division I Tournament during their transition period, although they can be eligible for other tournaments such as the College Basketball Invitational.
