History

In November 2006, the first issue of Sactown Magazine was published. It was founded by Rob Turner and Elyssa Lee. Turner, 39, graduated from UC Davis and went on to work for the Sacramento News & Review , Harper's Magazine , SmartMoney , Money magazine and had written for The New York Times Magazine and The Wall Street Journal . His wife Lee, 34, was a South Korea native who worked for InStyle magazine in Sacramento. The two met while working together at Money magazine in New York City. Steve Childs, former president of Texas Monthly , was Sactown's first publisher. [2]

The first issue was 128 pages and funded by money from the owner's family and their personal savings. The business faced stiff competition from the older and larger Sacramento Magazine . Sactown aimed for a younger audience, specifically couples in their early 30s. "We're not reinventing the wheel when it comes to a city magazine," Turner said. "Our goal is for every single page to generate some type of discussion or be surprising." [2] Sam McManis, a media critic for The Sacramento Bee , offered both rants and raves on the inaugural issue. [3]

In 2023, Sactown purchased the assets of the defunct Sacramento Magazine, which included intellectual property like subscriber and advertising lists. [4]
