Sadaise Arencibia (born c. 1981) [1] is a Cuban ballet dancer. In 1999, she joined the Cuban National Ballet where she has been a star dancer (primera bailarina) since 2009. [2]

Early life

After beginning her training at Havana's Alejo Carpentier Ballet School in 1991, she continued her studies at the Cuban National Ballet School under Ramona de Saá, Adria Velázquez and Mirtha Hermida. While a student, she participated in cultural exchanges with Mexico and Colombia. In 1997, she won the gold medal at the Alicia Alonso Competition in Havana and in 1998 was a finalist in the USA International Ballet Competition in Jackson, Mississippi. [3]

Career

In 1999, Arencibia joined the Cuban National Ballet under the artistic leadership of Alicia Alonso. In 2005 she became a principal dancer and in 2009 she was promoted to the top rank of prime dancer. She has toured with the ballet company to various locations in Europe and has performed as a guest artist at the Rome Opera Ballet (2006 and 2007) and at the Teresa Carreño Theatre (2008) in Caracas, Venezuela. In 2010, she performed the role of Kitri at Don Quixote in the Queensland Performing Arts Centre in Brisbane, Australia. Other classical roles she particularly enjoys dancing include Odile/Odette in Swan Lake and Aurora in The Sleeping Beauty . [4] [1] She received considerable acclaim for both when she performed them with the Cuban National Ballet at the Sadler's Wells Theatre in 2005, one reviewer calling her "the company's technical genius". [5] She very much likes to dance in contemporary works too. [6]

Lorna Feijóo is a Cuban former ballet dancer. Her career started at the Cuban National Ballet, where she rose through the ranks. She left Cuba in 2001, then spent two years with the Cincinnati Ballet, before joining the Boston Ballet in 2003, where she remained as a principal dancer until she retired. Her sister, Lorena Feijóo, was also a ballet dancer.

Rolando Sarabia Oquendo is a Cuban-born American ballet dancer. He was an acclaimed Principal Dancer for The Washington Ballet under artistic director Julie Kent and former artistic director Septime Webre. He has danced with many companies including the Cuban National Ballet, the Houston Ballet, Miami City Ballet, and American Ballet Theatre as a guest artist in 2011. Erika Kinetz of The New York Times called him the "Cuban Nijinsky" and compared him to the young Mikhail Baryshnikov. In 2021 he was named the artistic director of Roanoke Ballet Theatre.

Josefina Méndez was a Cuban ballet dancer and ballet mistress. Along with Loipa Araújo, Aurora Bosch, and Mirta Plá, she is regarded as one of the "Four jewels of Cuban ballet". Her style was noted for poetic play with subtlety and discipline. She was a principal artist with the Cuban National Ballet. She received the National Order of the Legion of Honour of France.

Mirta Esteny Plá Cabal was a Cuban dancer, teacher of ballet, and ballet master. Along with Loipa Araújo, Aurora Bosch, and Josefina Méndez, she is regarded as one of the "four jewels of Cuban ballet". She was a principal artist with the Cuban National Ballet.

Mijaela Tesleoanu was a Romanian dancer, classical ballet teacher, and ballet master who developed her artistic work in Cuba.

Irma Contreras is a former dancer, choreographer, and ballet teacher. She is part of the 1940s generation of Venezuelan dancers. She created and founded the National Ballet of Venezuela with her sister Margot Contreras.

Marta García was a Cuban ballet dancer and prima ballerina who worked for the Cuban National Ballet and its corps de ballet. She made her stage debut for the Alicia Alonso Ballet Academy at age seven and trained at Havana's Cuban National Ballet School. García won the 1968 Varna International Ballet Competition youth prize and earned a silver medal at the same event two years later. She was director of the Colon Theater Ballet in Buenos Aires from 2001 to 2004 working with her husband.
