Windsurfing is a wind propelled water sport that is a combination of sailing and surfing. It is also referred to as "sailboarding" and "boardsailing", and emerged in the late 1960s from the aerospace and surf culture of California. Windsurfing gained a popular following across Europe and North America by the late 1970s and had achieved significant global popularity by the 1980s. Windsurfing became an Olympic sport in 1984.

Iván Pastor Lafuente is a Spanish windsurfer. He competed at the men's sailboard event in the 2004 Summer Olympics, when the Mistral class was the sailboard event, and the 2008 and 2012 Summer Olympics when the sailboard class was the RS-X. In 2005 he won a bronze medal at the Mistral European Championship. In addition, he won a silver medal at the 2001 Mediterranean Games held in Tunisia, in the Mistral class.
Sailboarding, also known as Windsurfing for the 2013 Island Games, will take place at the Spanish Point Boat Club in Pembroke Parish. The schedule states that medals will be awarded on 19 July 2013. However, depending on the weather, preliminary races could occur from 13 to 18 July 2013.
Irina Emilova Konstantinova-Bontemps is a Bulgarian windsurfer, who specialized in Neil Pryde RS:X class. She represented Bulgaria in four editions of the Olympic Games, and has also placed outside the top ten in both Mistral and RS:X classes. In 2006, Konstantinova married French windsurfer, two-time world champion, and later 2008 Olympic silver medalist Julien Bontemps before she relocated to France, and trained for ASPTT Nantes. As of September 2013, Konstantinova is ranked no. 88 in the world for the sailboard class by the International Sailing Federation.
Demita Vega de Lille is a Mexican windsurfer, who specialized in Neil Pryde RS:X class. She represented her nation Mexico at the 2008 Summer Olympics, and later picked up a silver medal in windsurfing at the 2011 Pan American Games in Guadalajara. As of September 2014, Vega is ranked seventh in the world for the sailboard class by the International Sailing Federation, following her successes at the North American and ISAF World Championships.

Jonathan "Jono" Dunnett is a British-born Spanish-based adventurer, writer and windsurfing instructor. In May 2019, he has completed a solo expedition to windsurf the European mainland coastline on a windsurfer, landing at Batumi, Georgia.
