Detroit St. Martin de Porres High School (short form: "Detroit DePorres", "DePorres", or "DP") was a co-educational college preparatory school in Detroit, Michigan and belonged to the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Detroit.

St. Martin de Porres was a member of the Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) and competed athletically in the Catholic High School League (CHSL).

School demographics

St. Martin de Porres was co-educational and had an enrollment 275 students in 2005. [3] The student body was 100% African-American in 2005. [4] There were an average of 24.8 classroom teachers [5] and the student-teacher ratio was 11.08 [6] in 2005.

Athletic accomplishments

St. Martin de Porres holds the MHSAA state record for the most state titles in boys track with fifteen (as of 2015). [7]

The Eagles have the most football state titles on any CHSL school with twelve (as of 2015). [8]

St. Martin de Porres has won seven state championships in boys basketball. [9]

Eagle teams have won three girls track state championships. [10] The girls also have won two basketball state championships. [11]

The Catholic High School League (CHSL) is a school athletic conference based in Detroit, Michigan, led by director Victor Michaels. Most member schools are also members of the Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA), the governing body for Michigan scholastic sports, except for the five schools from Toledo, which are members of the Ohio High School Athletic Association. Unlike many similar leagues, the CHSL governs secondary, middle, and elementary sports for most of the parochial schools in the Detroit area. Most league schools are Catholic, but there are other religious denominations as well. Every school in the CHSL is a private school. In 2019, the CHSL council voted to rename the AB/ Division I/II championship to the Bishop division championship, and the CD/ Division III/IV championship to the Cardinal Division championship.

Kalamazoo Central High School is a four-year public high school in Kalamazoo, Michigan serving students from ninth through twelfth grades. It was the first public high school in Michigan. It began operating in 1858 and graduated its first class of five men and three women in 1859. It moved to its current location in 1972. It is rated Class A by the Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA). On May 4, 2010, the White House announced that Central High had won the first annual Race to the Top High School Commencement Challenge and that President Barack Obama would deliver the school’s 2010 commencement address.

Ford High opened its doors on September 5, 1957; it was constructed to accommodate an overflow of students from nearby Cooley, Mumford, and Redford high schools. In 2007, DPS closed Redford High School. As a result, Henry Ford now serves the Detroit sub-community of Old Redford. DPS will re-assume control of Ford High in fall 2017.
