The Saint Petersburg is a four-star hotel in Saint Petersburg, Russia. It was constructed in 1970 under the name Hotel Leningrad. The hotel has 554 rooms and a concert hall with a capacity of 797 people. It also contains an exhibition area and three conference halls.[ citation needed ]
In 1967, the Hotel Leningrad started construction. The architects were S.B. Speransky, V.E. Struzman and N.V. Kamensky. The original plan was to build the hotel in two stages. The second stage, never completed, was to construct a 13-story building in the form of an open-ring with an inner courtyard with a swimming pool and fountains.[ citation needed ]
Opening in 1970, the hotel was the first large hotel in the area since before World War II. The hotel was the first in the Soviet Union to offer buffet-breakfast and Continental breakfast.[ citation needed ]
In 1986, the second part of the match for the world chess championship between Garry Kasparov and Anatoliy Karpov was held in the hotel.[ citation needed ]
On February 23, 1991, a fire consumed the seventh, eighth and ninth floors of the hotel, killing seven guests and nine firefighters. A monument to the firefighters is located near the Kalininsky district fire station.[ citation needed ]

The Club Cinq-Sept fire was a major blaze at a nightclub just outside Saint-Laurent-du-Pont, Isère, France, on Sunday, 1 November 1970. The fire claimed the lives of 146 people, almost all of whom were aged between 17 and 30. The scale of the disaster shocked the country. Subsequent official enquiries revealed a catalogue of shortcomings, oversights and evasions with regard to fire safety at both local and département level. Criminal charges were brought against a number of people; some received suspended jail sentences.
The Kerns Hotel fire of December 11, 1934, in Lansing, Michigan, United States, killed 34 people, including seven Michigan state legislators, and according to the Lansing Fire Department, was the worst fire disaster in the history of Lansing. The fire occurred around 5:30 am and spread rapidly through the building's wooden interior, trapping many of the hotel's 215 guests in their rooms and forcing them to escape via fire ladders or life nets. In addition to the fatalities, 42 more people, including fourteen firemen, were injured in the fire, which was thought to have been caused by a carelessly discarded cigarette.

On 25 August 2018, a fire broke out at the Beilong Hot Spring Hotel in Harbin. Located in the city's Taiyang Island (太阳岛) resort area, the four-storey brick-and-concrete hotel mostly accommodates domestic tourists and was hosting over 100 people at the time, many of whom were visiting for an annual marathon. The fire resulted in 20 deaths and 23 injuries.
