Sally Roberts is a veteran of the war in Afghanistan, national champion wrestler, and founder of non-profit Wrestle Like a Girl.

Early life and education

Roberts was the first in her family to graduate from high school. [3] She went on to receive a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs, as well as a Master of Arts in Sport and Performance Psychology from the University of the Rockies. [4]

Military service

Roberts joined the Army in 2009, and served with the 320th Psychological Operations Company. Roberts volunteered for a deployment to Afghanistan, and later joined the U.S. Army World Class Athlete Program. [3]

Wrestling

Roberts' wrestling career began in eighth grade, when she was given a choice between juvenile detention and an after-school activity. [3] She earned her first gold medal at the Keystone Open in 1999, the same year she first placed in both U.S. National and World team trials. [1] Roberts ultimately became a two-time World bronze medal winner and three-time U.S. National Champion. [5]

Activism

Roberts founded Wrestle Like a Girl, a non-profit that seeks to provide resources for female wrestlers. She advocates for NCAA recognition of female wrestling, which would provide access to benefits such as health insurance and scholarships currently available to male wrestlers only. [5] [6]

April Heinrichs American former soccer player and coach (born 1964)

April Dawn Heinrichs is an American former soccer player and coach. She was among the first players on the United States women's national soccer team, and was captain of the United States team which won the first ever FIFA Women's World Cup in 1991. She finished her international playing career with 46 caps and 35 goals. Heinrich coached the USA women's team from 2000 to 2004, under her tenure team USA finished third in 2003 FIFA Women's World Cup, won silver medal at Sydney 2000, and gold medal at Athens 2004 Olympics. In 1998 she became the first female player inducted into the National Soccer Hall of Fame. In January 2011, Heinrichs was appointed Technical Director for women's soccer by United States Soccer Federation.

Lisa Fernandez American Olympic gold medalist

Lisa Maria Fernandez is an American former softball player and current assistant coach at UCLA. She played college softball at UCLA as a pitcher and third baseman, and is a three-time medal winning Olympian with Team USA.

James "Chico" Hernandez is an accomplished athlete in the sport of Sambo. He is the first Sambo champion to be featured on a box of Wheaties Energy Crunch and the first Sambo wrestler to appear in CNN/SI "Faces In the Crowd".

Rebecca "Becca" Ward is an American sabre fencer. She won the gold medal at the sabre 2006 World Fencing Championships after beating Mariel Zagunis 15–11 in the final, and took bronze in both individual and team sabre events at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. She also won the women's NCAA national individual sabre championship three times, the first in history to do so in sabre. In 2015, she was inducted into the USA Fencing Hall of Fame.

Emily Phillipa Jacobson is an American Olympic sabre fencer. She won a bronze medal in the 2003 Pan American Games, and was 2004 Junior World Champion in women's saber.

Air Force Falcons Intercollegiate sports teams of the United States Air Force Academy

The Air Force Falcons are the intercollegiate athletic teams that represent the United States Air Force Academy, located in Colorado Springs, Colorado. The athletics department has 17 men's and 10 women's NCAA-sanctioned teams. The current athletic director is Nathan Pine. The majority of Falcon teams compete as members of the Mountain West Conference.

Jordan Burroughs American wrestler

Jordan Ernest Burroughs is an American freestyle wrestler and graduated folkstyle wrestler who currently competes at 79 kilograms, and notoriously competed at 74 kilos. In freestyle, he was the 2012 Olympic Gold medalist, is the reigning and a five-time World Champion, three-time Pan American Games Gold medalist, four-time Pan American champion and four-time US Open National Champion, making the US World or Olympic Team in ten occasions. In folkstyle, Burroughs was a two-time NCAA Division I champion for the Nebraska Cornhuskers and was awarded the Dan Hodge Trophy in 2012. Burroughs is widely known for his double leg takedown and is considered one of the greatest American freestyle wrestlers of all time.

Marcie Van Dusen is an amateur female American freestyle wrestler, who competed for the women's 55-kg category at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. She is a two-time U.S national and world team trials champion, and a resident athlete at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado. She is also a silver medalist at the 2007 Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Dalilah Muhammad American hurdler

Dalilah Muhammad is an American track and field athlete who specializes in the 400 meters hurdles. She is the 2016 Rio Olympics champion and 2020 Tokyo Olympics silver medalist, becoming at the latter the second-fastest woman of all time in the event with her personal best of 51.58 seconds. Muhammad was second at both the 2013 and 2017 World Championships to take her first gold in 2019, setting the former world record of 52.16 s. She is only the second female 400 m hurdler in history, after Sally Gunnell, to have won the Olympic, World titles and broken the world record. David Taylor (wrestler, born 1990) American wrestler

David Morris Taylor III is an American freestyle and graduated folkstyle wrestler who currently competes at 86 kilograms. In 2021, Taylor became the 2020 Summer Olympic Games gold medalist after defeating reigning Olympic and World Champion Hassan Yazdani, a feat he repeated from his 2018 World Championship performance where he stormed his way to the title. He later became the 2021 World Championship runner-up, after being defeated by Yazdani.

Jden Cox American wrestler

J'den Michael Tbory Cox is an American freestyle wrestler and graduated folkstyle wrestler who competes at 92 kilograms. In freestyle, Cox is a two-time World Champion at 92 kilos, and while competing at 86 kilos, he went on to claim a bronze medal from the 2016 Summer Olympics as well as a 2017 World Championship bronze medal. During college, Cox wrestled for the Missouri Tigers, and went on to become a three–time NCAA Division I National champion, as well as a four–time Mid-American Conference champion, becoming one of the most accomplished Tigers in the history of the program.

Mary Jennings Hegar is an American United States Air Force veteran and former political candidate. In 2012, she sued the U.S. Air Force to remove the Combat Exclusion Policy. In 2017, she published the memoir Shoot Like a Girl, which describes her service in Afghanistan.

Thomas Patrick Gilman is an American freestyle wrestler and graduated folkstyle wrestler who competes at 57 kilograms. In freestyle, Gilman is the 2021 World Champion and was a 2020 Tokyo Olympic bronze medalist. In folkstyle, Gilman was a three–time NCAA Division I All-American, the 2016 NCAA National runner–up, and a Big Ten Conference champion out of the University of Iowa.
