It is the headquarters of Northern Revenue Division, Mahanadi Coalfield Limited (MCL) and one of the railway division from East Coast Railway zone. It is situated about 300 km (190 mi) west of the state capital Bhubaneswar, 550 km (340 mi) west of Kolkata in West Bengal and 278 km (173 mi) east of Raipur in Chhattisgarh. It is on the bank of the Mahanadi River.

Bargarh District is an administrative district of Odisha state in eastern India. The city of Bargarh is its district headquarters. The district was carved out of the erstwhile district of Sambalpur in 1st April, 1993.

Nag has been compared to Gangadhar Meher for his Kosli style of writing which is also known as Sambalpuri writing, and is the western-variation of the Odia language of writing poem.The BBC made a documentary film about his life and works. He is best known for his work Kavyanjali, an anthology of English translation of Nag's selected poetry which was launched in 2nd October 2016.

Hirakud Express is a tri-weekly express train which runs between Amritsar and Visakhapatnam. It was initially introduced between Sambalpur and Hazrat Nizamuddin Railway Station (Delhi) in 1992.
