The Samford Bulldogs women's basketball team, formerly the Samford Lady Bulldogs, is the intercollegiate women's basketball program representing Samford University in Homewood, Alabama, United States. Since 2008, the team competes in the Southern Conference (SoCon), after leaving the Ohio Valley Conference (OVC). They play their home games at the Pete Hanna Center. [2]

Coaches

The Samford Bulldogs have had three coaches in their history. Until the end of the 2018–19 season, the team was coached by Mike Morris, who took over in 2002 for Janet Cone after she became Samford's associate athletics director. [3] In 2019, Carley Kuhns was hired from Valdosta State University to become the third head coach in history. [4]

The Samford Bulldogs are the 17 varsity teams that represent Samford University in NCAA Division I athletics. The men's basketball team made its first NCAA Tournament appearances in 1999 and 2000. They were led by Reed Rawlings, Marc Salyers, and Chris Weaver. The women's basketball team made its initial NCAA tournament appearance in the 2011 NCAA Women's Division I Basketball Tournament and made its second consecutive appearance in the tournament in 2012. The baseball team made its first NCAA tournament appearance in the 2012 NCAA Division I baseball tournament, reaching the finals of the Tallahassee Regional. The Samford Bulldogs football program is the intercollegiate American football team for Samford University located in Homewood, Alabama. The team competes at the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) level as a member of the Southern Conference (SoCon). Samford's first football team was fielded in 1902. The team was known as the Howard Bulldogs through the 1965 season when Howard College was renamed as Samford University. Howard was located in Birmingham, Alabama prior to 1957. Since 1958, the Bulldogs have played their home games at Pete Hanna Stadium, which now has a seating capacity of 6,700, in Homewood. Chris Hatcher has served as Samford's head coach since the 2015 season.

Bennie Seltzer is an American college basketball coach who most recently served as the interim head coach of the Evansville Purple Aces team following the firing of Walter McCarty. Seltzer is the former head coach of the Samford Bulldogs, a position to which he was hired on April 5, 2012. Previously, he was hired in April 2008 by new Indiana Hoosiers head coach Tom Crean, who brought him and fellow assistant Tim Buckley over from his staff at Marquette. Following his dismissal from Samford, Seltzer was hired by Crean to be Indiana's Director of Player Performance.

Janet Cone is an American college athletic director for the UNC Asheville Bulldogs, a position she has held since 2004. In 2015, she became a member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I men's basketball committee. She has also been a women's basketball coach for several teams, including Saint Leo University, Western Carolina University, Mars Hill College and Samford University, as well as an AD for some of those.

The 2019–20 Samford Bulldogs men's basketball team represented Samford University in the 2019–20 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The Bulldogs, led by sixth-year head coach Scott Padgett, played their home games at the Pete Hanna Center in Homewood, Alabama as members of the Southern Conference. They finished the season 10–23, 4–14 in SoCon play to finish in eighth place. They lost in the first round of the SoCon tournament to VMI.

The Bulldogs, led by 1st-year head coach Carley Kuhns, play their home games at Pete Hanna Center. They are members of the Southern Conference (SoCon)

The 2020–21 Samford Bulldogs men's basketball team represented Samford University in the 2020–21 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The Bulldogs, led by first-year head coach Bucky McMillan, played their home games at the Pete Hanna Center in Homewood, Alabama as members of the Southern Conference.

The 2023–24 Samford Bulldogs women's basketball team represented Samford University during the 2023–24 NCAA Division I women's basketball season. The Bulldogs, who were led by fifth-year head coach Carley Kuhns, played their home games at the Pete Hanna Center in Homewood, Alabama as members of the Southern Conference.
