Janet Cone

Janet Cone (born December 7, 1955) is an American college athletic director for the UNC Asheville Bulldogs, a position she has held since 2004. In 2015, she became a member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I men's basketball committee. She has also been a women's basketball coach for several teams, including Saint Leo University, Western Carolina University, Mars Hill College and Samford University, as well as an AD for some of those. Background

Cone was born in Summerville, South Carolina, to Joseph and Florence Cone, who have operated a logging business since 1954. [2] Cone attended Summerville High School, playing basketball for four years. In 1978, she graduated magna cum laude with a bachelor's degree from Furman University, where she played basketball and field hockey. She later obtained a master's degree from the University of South Carolina. [1] [3]

Coaching and executive career

From 1986 to 1990, Cone was head coach of both the Mars Hill College volleyball and women's basketball teams. She was head coach of the women's basketball team at Western Carolina University (1990–1993). At Saint Leo University, she was head women’s basketball coach and volleyball coach, before becoming assistant director of athletics. In 1996, Cone became the first head coach of the Samford Bulldogs women's basketball team. After five years, she was appointed associate athletics director. Since 2004, she has been athletics director for UNC Asheville. [1] [4]

While at UNCA, Cone has managed to get its women's golf program into the 2016 NCAA Division I, only the second sport added since 2010. She also revived the women's swimming program in 2012, the first time that the UNCA athletics department had added a sport in 20 years. [1]

In 2013, Cone was one of only 28 directors of athletics to be named as Under Armour AD of the Year by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics. [5] In September 2015, Cone became the only woman added to the NCAA Division I men's basketball committee, which selects and seeds the teams for NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Championship. Her tenure is expected to be ten years. [1]

Kimmel Arena is the home of the UNC Asheville Bulldogs basketball programs, both men and women's. It is a 3,200-seat arena located on the campus of the University of North Carolina at Asheville in Asheville, North Carolina. Kimmel Arena, named for local businessman Joe Kimmel, is part of the much larger Wilma M. Sherrill Center, which is a 133,500-square-foot (12,400 m2) facility. The arena held its first games, both exhibitions, on November 7, 2011, and formally opened November 13, 2011, as UNC Asheville hosted the University of North Carolina Tar Heels. It replaces the Justice Center as UNCA's home court, but the latter will remain as a training facility and physical education complex.

Samford Bulldogs

The Samford Bulldogs are the 17 varsity teams that represent Samford University in NCAA Division I athletics. The Men's basketball team made its first NCAA appearance in the 1999 and 2000 NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Tournament. The women's basketball team made its initial NCAA tournament appearance in the 2011 NCAA Women's Division I Basketball Tournament and made its second consecutive appearance in the tournament in 2012. The baseball team made its first NCAA tournament appearance in the 2012 NCAA Division I Baseball Tournament, reaching the finals of the Tallahassee Regional. Additionally, the softball team made its first NCAA Tournament Appearance in 2016. For the first time in history, the lady bulldogs won the Regular Season Championship as well as the Tournament Championship to cap off a record high of 40 wins on the season. The school is a member of the Southern Conference in Division I of the NCAA, after moving from the Ohio Valley Conference in 2008. The Samford Athletics staff is headed by athletic director Martin Newton, whose appointment was announced on March 9, 2011.

The facility opened in 1988. It has a capacity of 300 spectators. It features an electronic scoreboard, dugouts, and a natural grass surface.
