Canisius University is a private Jesuit university in Buffalo, New York. It was founded in 1870 by Jesuits from Germany and is named after St. Peter Canisius. Canisius offers more than 100 undergraduate majors and minors, and around 34 master's and certificate programs.

John Patrick Beilein is an American professional basketball coach who currently serves as the Senior Player Development Advisor for the Detroit Pistons of the National Basketball Association (NBA). Before being hired by Detroit, Beilein served as the head coach of the Cleveland Cavaliers of the National Basketball Association (NBA). Prior to joining the Cavaliers, he coached the Michigan Wolverines (2007–2019), West Virginia Mountaineers (2002–2007), Richmond Spiders (1997–2002), Canisius Golden Griffins (1992–1997) in NCAA Division I as well as the Le Moyne Dolphins (1983–1992), Nazareth College (1982–1983) and Erie Community College (1978–1982). Beilein has won 754 career games at four-year universities and 829 games altogether, including those at the junior college level. Beilein's overall career wins counting the time spent in Cleveland is 843 games.

The Canisius Golden Griffins football program were the intercollegiate American football team for Canisius College located in Buffalo, New York. The team competed in the NCAA Division I-AA and were members of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. The school's first football team was fielded in 1918. Canisius participated in football from 1918 to 1949, and again from 1975 to 2002, compiling an all-time record of 241–251–26. At the conclusion of the 2002 season, the Canisius football program was discontinued, along with seven other school athletic programs, as part of an effort to overhaul and streamline the school's athletic department.
The Buffalo Bulls baseball team was a varsity intercollegiate athletic team of the University at Buffalo in Amherst, New York, United States. From 2001 to 2017, the team was a member of the Mid-American Conference East division, which is part of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) at the Division I level. The Bulls played their home games at Amherst Audubon Field on the UB campus. The Bulls were coached by Ron Torgalski for the program's final 11 seasons, from 2007 through 2017. At the conclusion of the 2017 season, the program was eliminated by the university.

Daniel J. White is an American university sports administrator. He is the athletic director for the Tennessee Volunteers. White held the same position at the University at Buffalo from 2012 to 2015 and the University of Central Florida from 2015 to 2021. Prior to his tenure at Buffalo, he was the senior associate athletic director for Ole Miss.
The Battle of the Bridge is the name of the all-sports rivalry between the Canisius Golden Griffins and the Niagara Purple Eagles. Both schools are members of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. The two teams compete every school year in 14 sports; men's baseball, men's and women's basketball, men's and women's cross country, men's golf, men's ice hockey, women's lacrosse, men's and women's soccer, women's softball, men's and women's swimming & diving, and women's volleyball. The overall winner of the annual series receives the Canal Cup trophy. The two long-time Western New York rivals created the trophy in 2007 to enhance the historic rivalry between the two schools. The name of the series is a reference to the Grand Island Bridge, which each team crosses when traveling along I-190 to the other's campus. The name of the trophy is a reference to the Erie Canal, which separates Erie County, where Canisius is located, and Niagara County, where Niagara is located.
William Joseph Maher II is the current director of athletics for Canisius College. He previously served as interim athletics director of the University at Buffalo from 2003 to 2005. Maher played football at Canisius from 1985–1989, graduating in 1989 with a degree in physical education.
Ronald J. Torgalski is an American former college baseball and college basketball coach. He was most recently the head baseball coach for the University at Buffalo. During his nine seasons as coach of the Bulls, he has compiled an overall record of 182–296.
Joe Licata is an American football coach and former quarterback. He played college football at Buffalo. He was signed by the Cincinnati Bengals as an undrafted free agent in 2016.
Michael Sisti is the women's ice hockey current head coach at Mercyhurst University. Since 1999, he has coached Mercyhurst to 4 Frozen Four appearances, 15 College Hockey America (CHA) post-season titles, and 1 Great Lakes Women's Hockey Association (GLWHA) post-season title. He reached 500 wins in 2020, becoming only the second coach in Division I women's college hockey to achieve that milestone. In 2018, he was inducted into the Erie Hall of Fame.
Daniel Starr is a former American college athletics administrator. Starr served as director of athletics at Canisius College from 1974 to 2000. Starr also served as a history professor at Canisius. During his 26-year career as athletic director at Canisius, Starr oversaw the creation of the Golden Griffins' women's athletic teams, as well as the building of the Demske Sports Complex on campus in 1989. In 1992, Starr hired John Beilein from NCAA Division II Le Moyne College to coach the Canisius Golden Griffins men's basketball team. Beilein led the Golden Griffins to a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference championship in 1996, and an appearance in the 1996 NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament, the first NCAA basketball tournament appearance for Canisius since 1957. Starr was elected to the Canisius College Sports Hall of Fame in 2000 and the Greater Buffalo Sports Hall of Fame in 2010.
Matt Mazurek is an American baseball coach, currently serving as the head baseball coach at Canisius College. After attending Jamestown Community College, Mazurek attended college at Canisius College and played on the Canisius Golden Griffins baseball team where he was named Canisius College Male Athlete of the Year in 2006. After graduating from Canisius in 2006, Mazurek went on to a three-year career in independent baseball, playing for the Joliet JackHammers in 2007, and the Rockford RiverHawks in 2008 and 2009. Mazurek served as an assistant baseball coach at Canisius College from 2007 to 2017. Mazurek was named head baseball coach at Canisius College on September 6, 2017. Mazurek was named the MAAC Coach of the Year in 2019.
Steve Watson is the current director of athletics for Loyola University Chicago. He previously served as athletic director at St. Bonaventure University from 2006 to 2014, and as an associate athletic director at Eastern Michigan University from 2001 to 2006. Watson attended college at Rutgers University and Bowling Green State University, where he played on both school's college basketball teams. Watson was named athletic director at Loyola University Chicago on November 12, 2014, and brought on his very close friend Kate Achter to be the new head women's basketball coach in 2016.
Rachelle Paul is an American college athletics administrator. She currently serves as deputy athletic director and senior women's administrator at the University of Miami. She previously served as director of athletics at Saint Peter's University from 2019 to 2023, as a senior associate athletic director at Seton Hall University from 2015 to 2019, and as a senior associate athletic director at Monmouth University from 2012 to 2015. Paul previously held administrative positions at Canisius College, the Northeast Conference, and the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. Paul attended college at Canisius College, where she played on the school's women's lacrosse team from 2000 to 2003. She also played on the soccer team as a defender in 2002, making eleven appearances. Paul was named athletic director at Saint Peter's University on October 30, 2019. She resigned from Saint Peter's on August 9, 2023 to accept a position as deputy athletic director and senior women's administrator at the University of Miami.
Michael R. Rappl is an American former basketball and softball coach. From 1980 until 2014, Rappl was the head softball coach at Canisius College. While at Canisius, Rappl helped build the program from a club team into a perennial NCAA tournament team and is considered a legendary figure in Canisius athletics history.
