The University of Central Florida (UCF) is a public research university in unincorporated Orange County, Florida. It is part of the State University System of Florida. With nearly 70,000 students, it has one of the largest student bodies in the United States.
Medicinal plants, also called medicinal herbs, have been discovered and used in traditional medicine practices since prehistoric times. Plants synthesise hundreds of chemical compounds for functions including defence against insects, fungi, diseases, and herbivorous mammals. Numerous phytochemicals with potential or established biological activity have been identified. However, since a single plant contains widely diverse phytochemicals, the effects of using a whole plant as medicine are uncertain. Further, the phytochemical content and pharmacological actions, if any, of many plants having medicinal potential remain unassessed by rigorous scientific research to define efficacy and safety.

The Journal of Medicinal Chemistry is a peer-reviewed medical journal covering research in medicinal chemistry. It is published by the American Chemical Society. It was established in 1959 as the Journal of Medicinal and Pharmaceutical Chemistry and obtained its current name in 1963. The editors-in-chief are Gunda I. Georg and Shaomeng Wang. They succeeded Philip S. Portoghese in 2012. Portoghese had served as editor-in-chief from 1972-2011. According to the Journal Citation Reports, the journal had a 2019 impact factor of 6.205, ranking it 3rd out of 61 journals in the category "Chemistry, Medicinal".
James A. Duke was an American botanist. He was the author of numerous publications on botanical medicine, including the CRC Handbook of Medicinal Herbs. He was well known for his 1997 bestseller, The Green Pharmacy. He developed the Dr. Duke's Phytochemical and Ethnobotanical Databases at the USDA.
Alpinia galanga, a plant in the ginger family, bears a rhizome used largely as an herb in Unani medicine and as a spice in Arab cuisine and Southeast Asian cookery. It is one of four plants known as "galangal", and is differentiated from the others with the common names lengkuas, greater galangal, and blue ginger.
Phytotherapy Research is a monthly peer-reviewed scientific journal publishing original research papers, short communications, reviews, and letters on medicinal plant research. Rick Stepp is an anthropologist and ethnobiologist who currently holds the position of UF Research Foundation Professor at the University of Florida. Stepp was previously the G. P. Wilder Professor of Botany at the University of Hawaii. His work examines the strong relationship between biological diversity and cultural diversity. He has also been involved in research on the importance of weeds as medicinal plants for indigenous peoples. He serves as a regional governor for Slow Food USA. He was the editor-in-chief of the Journal of Ethnobiology from 2005–2008, president of the Society for Economic Botany (2014), and president of the International Society of Ethnobiology (2018-2020).

Norman Bruce Anderson is an American scientist who was a tenured professor studying health disparities and mind/body health, and later an executive in government, non-profit, university sectors. Anderson is assistant vice president for research and academic affairs, and research professor of social work and nursing at Florida State University. He previously served as chief executive officer of the American Psychological Association (APA), the largest scientific and professional association for psychologists in the United States. Anderson became the APA's first African-American CEO when he was named to the post in 2003. He was the editor for the APA journal American Psychologist. Prior to joining APA, Anderson was an associate director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and held other roles in academia.
