Samuel John is an Indian actor and theatre activist. He played the role of the protagonist in the National Award-winning Punjabi film, Anhe Ghore Da Daan. He recently played a role in Punjabi movie Munda Hi Chahida as the father of Dharmender (Harish Verma) . [1]
The highly acclaimed film Anhe Ghore Da Daan (English: Alms for a Blind Horse) won National Awards for Best Direction, Cinematography and Best Feature Film in Punjabi at the 59th National Film Awards of India. [2]
Born and brought up in the village of Dhilwan near Faridkot, Punjab, Samuel John did his graduation in humanities from Kotkapura and then post-graduation in Theatre and Television from Punjabi University, Patiala. He works with his small group, Peoples' Theatre, Lehragaga, to stage plays mostly in rural areas of Punjab. [3]
Samuel acted in a single actor play Jooth based on autobiography of Om Prakash Valmiki, adapted in Punjabi by Balram. First staged by Media Artists, the play has had many shows thereafter. [4] Samuel also directed for Media Artists, the Punjabi adaptation of Shakespeare's Macbeth by Balram. [5] Other notable plays that he has directed or acted in, include, Maat Lok, Tain Ki Dard Na Aaya, Ghasia Hoia Aadmi and Baagan Da Raakha. Samuel John is the founder of Peoples theatre Lehragaga. The group is active in rural areas of Punjab touring around with its body of plays, generally staging in the street corners.

Anhe Ghore Da Daan is a Punjabi film based on the 1976 novel of the same name by Gurdial Singh. It derives its title from an ancient myth associated with the Churning of the Ocean, in which Lord Vishnu had been less than fair in his dispensation to the Asuras, supposedly the progenitors of latter-day Dalits. Through this novel, Gurdial Singh emphasizes that just as the Asuras had to depend upon the arbitrary dispensation of the Lord, in the same way, the modern Dalits have to depend on the mercy and compassion of the village overlords. Gurvinder Singh is an Indian film director. He is best known for his Punjabi language films Anhe Ghore Da Daan, and Chauthi Koot which premiered at Venice and Cannes Film Festival respectively. Gurvinder is an alumnus of the prestigious Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune from where he studied film-making and graduated in 2001. He travelled extensively through Punjab between 2002 and 2006, living and traveling with folk itinerants, documenting folk ballads and oral narratives. It led to his first documentary 'Pala'. He continued to make short experimental works and documenting arts/artists for the next few years. In 2005 he was invited by avant-garde Indian filmmaker Mani Kaul to be his teaching assistant for a master-class at FTII, which led to a close association with the filmmaker who became his mentor. He translated and published a book of conversations of Udayan Vajpeyi with Mani Kaul, titled 'Uncloven Space'. His latest film is 'Infiltrator' starring Veer Rajwant Singh which is a 15-minute short story in an international omnibus called 'In the same garden'
