The 3rd San Diego Film Critics Society Awards, given by the San Diego Film Critics Society on 18 December 1998, honored the best in film for 1998.
The San Diego Film Critics Society (SDFCS) is an organization of film reviewers from San Diego-based publications.
The year 1998 in film involved many significant films including; Shakespeare in Love, Saving Private Ryan, American History X, The Truman Show, Primary Colors, Rushmore, Rush Hour, There's Something About Mary, The Big Lebowski, and Terrence Malick's directorial return in The Thin Red Line. Animated releases included Antz, A Bug's Life, Mulan, The Prince of Egypt and The Rugrats Movie.
Gwyneth Kate Paltrow is an American actress and businesswoman. She gained early notice for her work in films, such as Seven (1995), Emma (1996), Sliding Doors,A Perfect Murder and Shakespeare in Love. Her other film credits include The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999), The Royal Tenenbaums and Shallow Hal, Proof (2005), for which she earned a Golden Globe nomination, and Two Lovers (2008). She won a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series in 2011 for her five-episode role as Holly Holliday on the Fox television series Glee. In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Paltrow portrays the character Pepper Potts, making her first appearance in Iron Man (2008), and later also in Iron Man 2 (2010), The Avengers (2012), Iron Man 3 (2013), Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017), and Avengers: Infinity War (2018). She will reprise her role in the upcoming Avengers: Endgame (2019).
Sliding Doors is a 1998 romantic comedy-drama film written and directed by Peter Howitt and starring Gwyneth Paltrow and John Hannah, while also featuring John Lynch, Jeanne Tripplehorn, and Virginia McKenna. The film alternates between two parallel universes, based on the two paths the central character's life could take depending on whether she catches a train, and causing different outcomes in her life.
Shakespeare in Love is a 1998 American romantic period comedy-drama film directed by John Madden, written by Marc Norman and playwright Tom Stoppard.

Gods and Monsters is a 1998 British-American period drama film that recounts the partly fictionalized last days of the life of film director James Whale, whose experience of war in World War I is a central theme. It stars Ian McKellen as Whale, along with Brendan Fraser, Lynn Redgrave, Lolita Davidovich and David Dukes. The film was directed and written by Bill Condon, based on Christopher Bram's novel Father of Frankenstein.
Susan Abigail Sarandon is an American actress and activist. She has received an Academy Award, a British Academy Film Award, and a Screen Actors Guild Award, and has been nominated for six Primetime Emmy Awards and nine Golden Globe Awards. She is known for her social and political activism for a variety of causes. She was appointed a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador in 1999 and received the Action Against Hunger Humanitarian Award in 2006.

The Florida Film Critics Circle (FFCC) is a film critic organization founded in 1996. The FFCC comprises 30 film critics from Florida-based print and online publications. At the end of each year, the FFCC members vote on the Florida Film Critics Circle Awards for outstanding achievements in films released that year. The organization also awards the Pauline Kael Breakout Award, named after film critic Pauline Kael, and the Golden Orange Award for Outstanding Contribution to Film. The FFCC membership includes film critics from Miami Herald, Miami New Times, Sun-Sentinel, Folio Weekly, Bloody Disgusting, WJNO Radio, WTVT, The Daytona Beach News-Journal, and Tampa Bay Times.
