San Luis Obispo National Forest was established as the San Luis Obispo Forest Reserve by the U.S. Forest Service in California on June 25, 1906 with 363,350 acres (1,470.4 km2). It became a National Forest on March 4, 1907. On July 1, 1908 part of the forest was combined with Santa Barbara National Forest, the remainder was used to establish San Luis National Forest, and the name was discontinued. [1]

United States National Forest classification of federal lands in the United States

National Forest is a classification of protected and managed federal lands in the United States. National Forests are largely forest and woodland areas owned collectively by the American people through the federal government, and managed by the United States Forest Service, a division of the United States Department of Agriculture.

Santa Barbara National Forest was established as the Santa Barbara Forest Reserve by the General Land Office in California on December 22, 1903 with 1,838,323 acres (7,439.43 km2) by consolidation of Pine Mountain and Zaka Lake and Santa Ynez Forest Reserves. It included areas of the San Rafael Mountains and Santa Ynez Mountains.

San Luis Obispo County, officially the County of San Luis Obispo, is a county located in the southern region of the U.S. state of California. As of the 2010 census, the population was 269,637. The county seat is San Luis Obispo.

Cochetopa National Forest was established in Colorado on July 1, 1908 with 932,890 acres (3,775.3 km2), renamed from Cochetopah National Forest. On May 26, 1930 it received land from Leadville National Forest. On July 1, 1944 Cochetopa was broken up between Gunnison, Rio Grande and San Isabel National Forests.

Cochetopah National Forest was established as the Cochetopah Forest Reserve in Colorado on June 13, 1905 with 1,133,330 acres (4,586.4 km2). It became a National Forest on March 4, 1907. On July 1, 1908 it was renamed Cochetopa National Forest and exchanged land with Leadville National Forest, ceding land to Rio Grande National Forest and Gunnison National Forest. Its lands exist now as portions of San Isabel, Gunnison and Rio Grande National Forests.

Durango National Forest was established in Colorado on July 1, 1911 from a portion of San Juan National Forest with 704,000 acres (2,850 km2). On November 21, 1920 it was re-combined with San Juan and the name was discontinued.

Las Animas National Forest was established by the U.S. Forest Service in Colorado and New Mexico on March 1, 1907 with 196,620 acres (795.7 km2), only 420 of which were in New Mexico. On May 27, 1910 part of Las Animas was transferred to San Isabel National Forest and the remainder was returned to public domain. The name was discontinued.

Magdalena National Forest was established as the Magdalena Forest Reserve by the U.S. Forest Service in New Mexico on November 5, 1906, with 153,781 acres (622.33 km2). It became a National Forest on March 4, 1907. On July 1, 1908, San Mateo National Forest was added. On February 23, 1909, the forest was combined with Datil National Forest

San Mateo National Forest was established as the San Mateo Forest Reserve by the U.S. Forest Service in New Mexico on November 5, 1906 with 424,663 acres (1,718.55 km2). It became a National Forest on March 4, 1907. On July 1, 1908 the entire forest was added to Magdalena National Forest and the name was discontinued.

Monterey National Forest was established as the Monterey Forest Reserve by the U.S. Forest Service in California on June 25, 1906 with 335,195 acres (1,356.49 km2). It became a National Forest on March 4, 1907. On July 1, 1908 Pinnacles National Forest and San Benito National Forest were added. On August 8, 1919 the entire forest was transferred to Santa Barbara National Forest and the name was discontinued. The lands presently exist in Los Padres National Forest.

San Benito National Forest was established by the U.S. Forest Service in California on October 26, 1907 with 140,069 acres (566.84 km2). On July 1, 1908 San Benito was added to Monterey National Forest and the name was discontinued. Much of the land that once consisted of San Benito National Forest is now administered by the Bureau of Land Management Hollister Field office as the Clear Creek Management Area.

The Pine Mountain and Zaka Lake Forest Reserve was established by the General Land Office in California on March 2, 1892 with 1,644,594 acres (6,655.44 km2) of the San Rafael Mountains in Santa Barbara County, California.

San Luis National Forest was established by the U.S. Forest Service in California on July 1, 1908 from part of San Luis Obispo National Forest with 355,990 acres (1,440.6 km2). On July 1, 1910 the entire forest was combined with Santa Barbara National Forest and the name was discontinued.

Montezuma National Forest was established as the Montezuma Forest Reserve by the U.S. Forest Service in Colorado on June 13, 1905 with 576,719 acres (2,333.90 km2). It became a National Forest on March 4, 1907. On July 1, 1908 part of Ouray National Forest was added. On July 1, 1947 the entire forest was divided between San Juan National Forest and Uncompahgre National Forest and the name was discontinued.

San Francisco Mountains National Forest was established as the San Francisco Mountains Forest Reserve by the General Land Office in Arizona on August 17, 1898 with 975,360 acres (3,947.1 km2). After the transfer of federal forests to the U.S. Forest Service in 1905,it became a National Forest on March 4, 1907. On July 1, 1908 the entire forest was combined with other lands to create Coconino National Forest and the name was discontinued.

San Gabriel National Forest was established as the San Gabriel Forest Reserve by the General Land Office in California on December 20, 1892 with 555,520 acres (2,248.1 km2). After the transfer of federal forests to the U.S. Forest Service in 1905, it became a National Forest on March 4, 1907.

San Jacinto National Forest was established as the San Jacinto Forest Reserve by the General Land Office in California on February 22, 1897 with 740,000 acres (3,000 km2). After the transfer of federal forests to the U.S. Forest Service in 1905, it became a National Forest on March 4, 1907. On July 1, 1908 the entire forest was combined with Trabuco Canyon National Forest to establish Cleveland National Forest, and the name was discontinued.

Trabuco Canyon National Forest was established by the U.S. Forest Service in California on July 6, 1907 with 153,387 acres (620.74 km2) when the name was changed from Trabuco Cañon Forest Reserve and land was added. On July 1, 1908 the forest was combined with San Jacinto National Forest to create Cleveland National Forest and the name was discontinued.

Wet Mountains National Forest was established as the Wet Mountains Forest Reserve by the U.S. Forest Service in Colorado on June 12, 1905 with 239,621 acres (969.71 km2). It became a National Forest on March 4, 1907. On July 1, 1908 the forest was combined with San Isabel National Forest and the name was discontinued.

The San Bernardino Forest Reserve was established by the General Land Office in California on February 25, 1893 with 737,280 acres (2,983.7 km2) in the San Bernardino Mountains. After the transfer of federal forests to the U.S. Forest Service in 1905, it became a National Forest on March 4, 1907. On July 1, 1908 the entire forest was combined with San Gabriel National Forest and Santa Barbara National Forest to create Angeles National Forest, and the name was discontinued. On September 30, 1925 San Bernardino National Forest was re-established from parts of Angeles and Cleveland National Forest.

The Grand Cañon Forest Reserve was established by the General Land Office in Arizona on February 20, 1893 with 1,851,250 acres (7,491.7 km2). It was renamed Grand Canyon on August 8, 1906 and transferred to the U.S. Forest Service becoming a National Forest on March 4, 1907. On July 1, 1908 the entire forest was divided between Coconino National Forest and the newly established Kaibab National Forest, while other areas were returned to public lands, and the name was discontinued.
