Sandra Carla de Lopes Morato e Leal Pires (born 26 August 1969) is a Portuguese singer and actor.
Sandra Pires was born on 26 August 1969 in Dili in Portuguese Timor. [1] She was initially raised by her grandparents in Portugal, then moved with her parents to Australia as a teenager. At age 15, she won the Australian television talent show Pot of Gold and went on to sing with a number of Australian bands, including Fifi Blue and The Flames and Spank You Very Much. [2]
She signed with BMG and moved to Vienna in 1992. In 1997, she released an English-language cover, "Here I AM", of Eros Ramazotti's hit "Adesso Tu" . [1]
In 2005, she played Maria in The Sound of Music at the Vienna Volksoper , the first time the musical had ever been performed in Austria, the setting of the story. [3] In 2010, she played Nellie Forbush in South Pacific, also at the Volksoper. [1]
In 2021, she won season two of The Masked Singer Austria disguised as a baby elephant. [4]
The Vienna State Opera is a historic opera house and opera company based in Vienna, Austria. The 1,709-seat Renaissance Revival venue was the first major building on the Vienna Ring Road. It was built from 1861 to 1869 following plans by August Sicard von Sicardsburg and Eduard van der Nüll, and designs by Josef Hlávka. The opera house was inaugurated as the "Vienna Court Opera" in the presence of Emperor Franz Joseph I and Empress Elisabeth of Austria. It became known by its current name after the establishment of the First Austrian Republic in 1921. The Vienna State Opera is the successor of the old Vienna Court Opera. The new site was chosen and the construction paid by Emperor Franz Joseph in 1861.
