Sanjay Pinto (born 14 November 1973) is an Indian lawyer, columnist, author, public speaker, talk show host, former bureau chief and resident editor at NDTV 24x7 and executive editor at NDTV Hindu.

Early life

Pinto was born to school teacher Judy Pinto and textile marketing executive Antony Vincent Pinto. Pinto studied at Don Bosco Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Egmore, Chennai. He appeared as the compere for his school play, Who Killed Cock Robin?. He was the Troop Commander of the Road Safety Patrol and was adjudged the Best Outgoing Student in 1991. [1] [2]

Education

A student of History and Politics at Loyola College, Chennai, Pinto founded and edited a students' magazine in college, the Loyola Herald and was the President of the Loyola Debating Society. He contributed to a column called Campus Beat in the Indian Express . He won the Gold Medal and the "Most Outstanding Student of the year" award in 1994. [3]

While at Loyola, Pinto completed a twinning course on Creative Writing through the college's tie-up with Cornell University. Pinto won the national debating championship representing the Dr. Ambedkar Government Law College, Chennai, where he completed his law degree in 1997. [4] [5] [6] [7] [8] While in college, he was offered a weekly column in the Indian Express to review programmes on television.[ citation needed ]

Television journalism

Pinto joined NDTV New Delhi Television in February 1998 as the Tamil Nadu correspondent for the 24 hour Star News Channel. He did live reports, news bulletins, and election special shows. Pinto became the Bureau Chief of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry of NDTV 24x7 in 2006. Pinto went on deputation to editorially head a new sister channel NDTV Hindu as its Executive Editor (Consultant-English News). At NDTV Hindu, Pinto spearheaded the live telecast of 17 news bulletins daily.[ citation needed ]

Pinto left NDTV Hindu in January 2012, took a sabbatical for a few months and returned to NDTV 24x7 as the Resident Editor (Consultant) for Tamil Nadu. Pinto quit NDTV in September 2012.[ citation needed ]

Pinto was conferred the Vocational Excellence Award for his contribution to the Indian Media by the Rotary Club of Madras North in 2012. [9] [10]

Radio talk shows

Pinto used to host shows on All India Radio even as a school and college student. In 2009, Pinto conceptualised and anchored a daily debate show on ChennaiLive 104.8 FM. This was followed by other shows like 'Voice of Chennai' [11] [12] [13] and 'You're Hired' [14] (a career guidance show) and ‘Welcome Home’, a show on real estate and fine living.

Columns

Pinto has been writing a weekly legal column "Justice For ALL" [15] [16] in the Deccan Chronicle and monthly columns in Ritz Newspaper on the bureaucracy "Corridors of Power" [17] and social issues "point Blank". [18]

Pinto formerly wrote a national fortnightly column on the social media for The Hindu since 2012 [19] and a column on political issues for Tehelka . [20]

Books

Pinto's first book, Speakers Are Made Not Born is on public speaking and published by Covenant Media in 2013 and received positive reviews. [21] [22] [23] [24]

His second book Justice For All earned testimonials from the Governor of Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra Shri CH Vidyasagar Rao, and television journalist and Pinto's friend and former colleague, Arnab Goswami. [25] [26] [27] [28]

Public speaking

Pinto conducts the Landmark Debates every year. [29] It started as a series of debates involving public figures [30] but is now restricted to students. [31] [32] He is a public speaker [33] at seminars, conferences, and panel discussions [34] such as the Battle of Ideas. [35] He regularly presides over Rotary Club events and Annual Day functions of educational institutions.[ citation needed ]

Practicing as a lawyer at the Madras High Court, he specialises in Media, Constitutional, Criminal, Consumer and Arbitration Law representing celebrity clients. [36] [37] [38]

Pinto represented India in the United States Consulate funded International Visitor's Leadership Program (IVLP) on the "Rule of Law & Judicial Reforms" in the United States in 2014. [39] He is a regular panelist on legal and political issues on national TV debates. [40] [41] [42] He is a guest faculty on Media Law at Symbiosis Law School, Pune.[ citation needed ]

Personal life

Pinto is married to Vidya, a former television journalist and college lecturer, now a media and communications professional. They have twin children (Vidan and Sanvi Pinto)

Sikkil C. Gurucharan is among the foremost young performing musicians of Carnatic music in India today. Gnanaskandan and is currently being mentored by Shri B. Krishnamurthy. He is an 'A' grade All India Radio artist. The 2013 Anti–Sri Lanka protests are a series of student protests and agitations initiated by the Students Federation for Freedom of Tamil Eelam in Tamil Nadu, India, against war crimes committed against Sri Lankan Tamil people by Sri Lankan army during the Eelam War IV. The protesters demanded that the Government of India vote in support of a United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) resolution censuring the Government of Sri Lanka for war crimes. Some radical groups even demanded the prosecution of the President of Sri Lanka, Mahinda Rajapakse for his role in the alleged genocide of Sri Lankan Tamils. Apart from college students, doctors, film personalities and employees of IT companies also participated in the protests.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Chennai City FC</span> Former Indian association football club

Chennai City Football Club was an Indian professional football club based in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu. The club predominantly competed in the I-League, which was then highest division of Indian football league system. They have also appeared in the Chennai Football League. Established in 1946 as Nethaji Sports Club, Chennai City spent its grand majority of history by competing in state leagues and knock-out tournaments until entering the national stage in 2016.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">2017 pro-jallikattu protests</span> Indian youth protests

The 2017 pro-jallikattu protests, also known as the pro-jallikattu movement, were leaderless apolitical youth protests which took place in January 2017 in large groups in several locations across the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Some sporadic smaller protests also took place across India as well as overseas. The chief motivation of the protest was against the Supreme Court's order to ban jallikattu, a traditional Tamil bull taming sport, which is held during Pongal, a harvest festival in the state of Tamil Nadu, India. The sport is conducted annually on the second day of the Tamil month Thai. The sport was banned by the Supreme Court in a decision citing cruelty to animals based on a lawsuit filed by the animal rights group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), which asserted that it violates the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act (PCA).

Gopi Shankar Madurai is an Indian equal rights and Indigenous rights activist. Shankar was one of the youngest, and the first openly intersex and genderqueer statutory authority and one of the candidates to contest in 2016 Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly election. Shankar is also the founder of Srishti Madurai Student Volunteer Collective. Shankar's work inspired the Madras High Court to direct the Government of Tamil Nadu to order a ban on forced sex-selective surgeries on intersex infants. In December 2017, Shankar was elected to the executive board of ILGA Asia. In August 2020, the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment appointed Shankar as the South Regional representative in the National Council for Transgender Persons.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Bjorn Surrao</span> Indian music composer and actor

Bjorn Surrao is an Indian singer-songwriter, performer, music producer and actor. He initially gained fame for his vocals in the song "Master the Blaster" from the Tamil film Master (2021). The track went on to #1 on iTunes, Apple Music and Spotify listings with over 32 million views on YouTube. Bjorn has an independent music band called "Franks got the Funk". After "Master the Blaster", Bjorn in collaboration with Arivu & Jigarthanda Music worked on a song for Think Music titled "Yenna Sonna" Chennai Super Kings Anthem. His acting gained widespread attention after his supporting comedy role in Doctor (2021). He also starred in Beast with Vijay.

Pradeep John, popularly known as the Tamil Nadu Weatherman, is an Indian amateur weather forecasting enthusiast and blogger from Tamil Nadu. His forecasts are more closely followed by and the other people of Chennai than the forecasts published by the India Meteorological Department during the monsoon season. He began blogging about weather and rainfall in 2008. In 2014, he started publishing on social media. His social media popularity increased after his accurate predictions during the 2015 Chennai floods.

The Chennai Football League, sometimes simply known as CFA Senior Division League, and formerly the Madras Football League, is the group of state-level football leagues in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu, including the top-level Senior Division. The League is organised by the Chennai Football Association (CFA), which is affiliated to the Tamil Nadu Football Association (TNFA), the official football governing body of the state.
