A church at the site was present by the 12th century, but reconstructed in its present form in the 17th century, and consecrated in 1661. The church houses canvases depicting prophets and saints by Pier Francesco Guala. On one of the left altars is a depiction of Santa Lucia with Saints Crispin and Crispiniano by Guglielmo Caccia. An additional work of note is the St. Sebastian by Giovanni Francesco Caroto. [1]

Villanova Monferrato is a comune (municipality) in the Province of Alessandria in the Italian region Piedmont, located about 60 kilometres (37 mi) east of Turin and about 30 kilometres (19 mi) northwest of Alessandria and about 17 kilometres (11 mi) south of Vercelli. Saint Evasius is believed to have been a missionary and bishop of Asti, in north-west Italy. He was forced to flee to the great Padan forest known as the Selva Cornea, where he and numerous followers were beheaded by pagan, or alternatively by Arian enemies, in the area of what is now Casale Monferrato. He is venerated as a saint of the Roman Catholic Church and is the patron of a number of towns in Piedmont and Lombardy. His cult is liveliest at Casale, where his remains are conserved in the cathedral dedicated to him.

Sebastiano Guala was an Italian church architect active between 1640 and 1680 in the area of Casale Monferrato, then capital of the Gonzaga-ruled state of Montferrat. He was born into a prominent family of Frassinello Monferrato and became a canon of the Collegiata di Santa Maria di Piazza in Casale. It has been thought probable that he belonged to the same family as the Casalese painter Pier Francesco Guala (1698–1757).
Maestro della Cappella di Santa Margherita a Crea, or more simply Maestro di Crea, is the name given to the anonymous Italian painter who was engaged by Guglielmo VIII Paleologo, Marquis of Montferrat, to decorate the chapel of Santa Margherita in the Santuario della Madonna di Crea near Serralunga di Crea. The work was performed during the years 1474–1479. The sanctuary stands on the highest hill of the Basso Monferrato; later it would form the focal pont of the Sacro Monte di Crea.
Margarita Balliana was a Renaissance woman of letters from Casale Monferrato in north-west Italy. She received a good education in philosophy and history and was described by Gioseffantonio Morano as ‘illustrious for the fineness of her talents’. She published various poems in Latin and in Italian and was praised by Stefano Guazzo, the most prominent writer of Renaissance Casale, and by Fulgenzio Alghisi, the historian of Monferrato. She married Federico Prato, a senator of Monferrato.
Cristoforo Moretti was a Lombard painter of the quattrocento who worked in a late International Gothic style very similar to that of Michelino da Besozzo’s last period. Few of the unsigned works later attributed to him are attributed with perfect certainty.
