Saoud bin Abdul Rahman Al-Thani (born 19 February 1970) [1] is a Qatari sports administrator and member of the ruling family of Qatar. He is the former secretary general of the Qatar Olympic Committee. He is now an ambassador of Qatar to Germany .

Born in Doha, he completed an undergraduate degree in electrical engineering at New Mexico State University in 1993 before going on to gain a master's degree in Sports Management from the University of Lyon. He served in the Qatar Armed Forces before becoming involved in national level sports administration positions. [2]

His first major organisational projects came as Director General of the committees for the 2004 Gulf Cup of Nations and the 2005 West Asian Games, as well as being a committee member for the 2006 Asian Games. [2] He became the secretary general of the Qatar Olympic Committee, president of the Qatar Basketball Federation and vice-president of the International Fencing Federation (FIE). [3] He is a regular sportsman with particular interests in tennis, shooting sports, soccer and swimming. [4]

Saoud Al Thani played a role in the winning of bids for Doha's first world level sports competitions including the 2014 FINA World Swimming Championships (25 m), [5] the 2015 World Men's Handball Championship, 2016 UCI Road World Championships, [6] 2018 Artistic Gymnastics World Championships and the 2019 World Championships in Athletics (being the bid leader for the latter). [7] [8] These projects formed part of the Qatar National Vision 2030, a long-term government plan to develop the nation's economic and cultural wealth through the proceeds of its oil resources. In response to criticism that Qatar had built world class sports facilities but had not delivered world class home-grown performers, he pointed to Qatar's small native population of 300,000 people, young athlete performances at the 2014 Summer Youth Olympics, and the comparative lack of success of larger nations, such as India. [10] He also promotes the participation of Qatari women in sport, noting the increased investment in women's sport in the country and participation of its female athletes at the 2011 Pan Arab Games and 2012 London Olympics. In May 2015 he was replaced as Secretary general of the Qatar Olympic Committee by Thani Al-Kuwari. [12] [13]

He is also a director of Amyris, a firm that specialises in renewable-based products. [14]

Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa bin Hamad bin Abdullah bin Jassim bin Mohammed Al Thani is a member of the ruling Al Thani Qatari royal family. The football team Al-Sadd plays there. The stadium, originally built in 1974, was rebuilt in 2004 for the Gulf Cup and currently has a capacity of 12,946 people. The stadium is also used as the home stadium of the Qatar national football team. The stadium was named after the former Minister of Education Jassim bin Hamad bin Abdullah Al-Thani, who had provided the permission for the club’s founding in 1969.

Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani Emir of Qatar

Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani is the Emir of Qatar. He is the fourth son of the previous Emir, Hamad bin Khalifa. He has been the ruler of Qatar since 2013 when his father abdicated the throne. Tamim had been the heir apparent since 2003 when his older brother Sheikh Jassim renounced his claim to the throne.

The 2006 Asian Games opening ceremony was held on 1 December at the multi-purpose Khalifa International Stadium. The Opening Ceremony was described by the media to be one of the most breath-taking and technologically spectacular multi-sports event ceremony, and the most expensive multi-sports event ceremony in the history of Asian Games at that time. It was created and produced by David Atkins who conducted the 2000 Summer Olympics opener and was filmed and broadcast live by International Games Broadcast Services' (IGBS) precursor Doha Asian Games Broadcast Services (DAGBS). 10 composers from Qatar, Lebanon, Egypt, Singapore, Japan, India, South Korea, Germany and Australia made the musical scores of the ceremonies.

Sheikh Jassim bin Mohammed Al Thani, also known as "The Founder", was the founder of the State of Qatar. He had a total of 56 children, 19 sons and 37 daughters.

Hamad bin Khalid bin Abdullah bin Jassim Al Thani ‎ was a Qatari entrepreneur and Chief of the Qatari police forces. He was a member of the House of Thani and cousin of the former Emir of Qatar, Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani.

Joaan bin Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani

Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani is a senior member of the House of Thani. He is the fifth son of former Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, and the third child of the Emir with his second wife, Sheikha Moza bint Nasser Al Missned. He is president of the Qatar Olympic Committee.

Doha bid for the 2020 Summer Olympics

Doha 2020 was a bid for the 2020 Summer Olympics by the city of Doha and the Qatar Olympic Committee.

Doha Goals Forum is already a well known manifestation, where many projects can be evoked. For example, during the third edition, in November 2014, Hassan Al Thawadi repeat that Qatar "can organise the World Cup in summer".

National Museum of Qatar Museum in Doha, Qatar

The National Museum of Qatar is a national museum in Doha, Qatar. The current building opened to the public on 28 March 2019, replacing the previous building which opened in 1975. The building was designed by architect Jean Nouvel who was inspired by the desert rose crystal, which can be found in Qatar. The museum site includes Sheikh Abdullah bin Jassim Al Thani's Palace, which is the heart of the Qatari national identity. As of 2013, the Director of the museum is Sheikha Amna.
