Sarah Rudd

Last updated

Sarah Rudd is one of the early pioneers of sports analytics applied to soccer. [1] In 2011, Rudd developed a method, based on Markov Chains, for evaluating the performance of players. [2] This method was later adopted by several other companies, academics and bloggers to evaluate actions from soccer event data. [3]

Soon after presenting her work, Rudd worked for startup StatsDNA which was acquired by Arsenal FC in 2013. [4] She is currently head of Analytics and Software Development at the Arsenal FC Data Analytics group. Her work is reported to have been highly influential within the club. [5]

Markov chain Mathematical system

A Markov chain is a stochastic model describing a sequence of possible events in which the probability of each event depends only on the state attained in the previous event. A countably infinite sequence, in which the chain moves state at discrete time steps, gives a discrete-time Markov chain (DTMC). A continuous-time process is called a continuous-time Markov chain (CTMC). It is named after the Russian mathematician Andrey Markov.

Hidden Markov Model (HMM) is a statistical Markov model in which the system being modeled is assumed to be a Markov process – call it  – with unobservable ("hidden") states. HMM assumes that there is another process whose behavior "depends" on . The goal is to learn about by observing . HMM stipulates that, for each time instance , the conditional probability distribution of given the history must not depend on .

In statistics, Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) methods comprise a class of algorithms for sampling from a probability distribution. By constructing a Markov chain that has the desired distribution as its equilibrium distribution, one can obtain a sample of the desired distribution by recording states from the chain. The more steps that are included, the more closely the distribution of the sample matches the actual desired distribution. Various algorithms exist for constructing chains, including the Metropolis–Hastings algorithm.

Environmental chemistry The scientific study of the chemical and phenomena that occur in natural places

Environmental chemistry is the scientific study of the chemical and biochemical phenomena that occur in natural places. It should not be confused with green chemistry, which seeks to reduce potential pollution at its source. It can be defined as the study of the sources, reactions, transport, effects, and fates of chemical species in the air, soil, and water environments; and the effect of human activity and biological activity on these. Environmental chemistry is an interdisciplinary science that includes atmospheric, aquatic and soil chemistry, as well as heavily relying on analytical chemistry and being related to environmental and other areas of science.
