General elections were held in Fiji between 15 and 29 April 1972,the first since independence from the United Kingdom in 1970. They were characterised by the lack of rancour between racial groups,typical of the 1966 general election and the 1968 by-elections.
Sir Vijay Raghubar Singh,KBE was an Indo-Fijian lawyer and politician who held Cabinet office in the 1960s and 1970s. Vijay Singh served in Prime Minister Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara's government in a variety of positions,including Attorney-General,and was president of the Indian Alliance,a division of the ruling Alliance Party. He quit the party in 1979 following disagreement with Alliance leadership and later joined the opposition National Federation Party. Vijay Singh was involved in the restructure of the Fiji sugar industry and was a leading member of the Jaycees movement in Fiji.
James Madhavan was an Indo-Fijian politician. He was a member of the Legislative Council and House of Representatives for most of the period between 1947 and 1973 and had two spells in the Executive Council.

Mohammed Taiyab Khan was an Indo-Fijian politician and lawyer. Between 1966 and 1977 he served as a member of the Legislative Council,Senate and House of Representatives. He was also Minister for Commerce,Industries and Co-operatives from 1972 to 1976.
Shiromaniam Madhavan,son of a founding member of the National Federation Party (NFP),was a Fiji Indian politician who served in the Labasa Town Council and the House of Representatives. He contested numerous elections for different political parties.
Unlike the majority of Fiji's Indian population,who are descendants of Indian indentured labourers brought to Fiji between 1879 and 1916,most of the Sikhs came to Fiji as free immigrants. Most Sikhs established themselves as farmers. Sikhs also came to Fiji as policemen,teachers and preachers. In recent years large numbers of Sikhs have emigrated from Fiji,especially to the United States,Canada,the United Kingdom,Australia and New Zealand. Sikhs in Fiji are generally referred to as Punjabis.
Harold Brockett Gibson was a New Zealand-born Fijian solicitor and politician. He served as a member of the Legislative Council and House of Representatives in three spells between 1937 and 1972. He also represented Fiji in the lawn bowls competition at the 1950 British Empire Games.
Austin Bernicke was a Nauruan politician. He was a member of the first Local Government Council in 1951,then a member of Parliament after it was established in 1966,serving until his death in 1977. He also served as a cabinet minister from 1968 until 1976.
Te Reuben Kiraua Uatioa was a Gilbertese politician. After being elected to the House of Representatives in 1967,he became the first Chief Elected Member of the Gilbert and Ellice Islands colony and then Leader of Government Business,serving until unexpectedly losing his seat in 1974. He then served as Speaker of the House of Representatives until 1975.
Chandra Prakash Sharma was an Indo-Fijian civil servant and politician. He briefly served as a member of the House of Representatives in 1977.
Sione Tui Kleiss was a Tuvaluan civil servant,priest and politician. He was a member of the legislature of the Gilbert and Ellice Islands from 1967 until the Ellice Islands separated in 1975,also serving as Minister for Commerce and Industry. Following the separation,he became a member of the Tuvalu House of Assembly and served as its Speaker.
Oala Oala-Rarua was a Papua New Guinean educator,civil servant,trade unionist,politician and diplomat. He served as a member of the House of Assembly and Assistant Minister for the Treasury between 1968 and 1972,later becoming the first Lord Mayor of Port Moresby and High Commissioner to Australia.
Ambilos Iehsi was a Micronesian politician. He served as a member of the House of Representatives and Senate of the Congress of the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands between 1967 until 1979,and then as Secretary of Resources and Development of the Federated States of Micronesia.
Douglas Walkden-Brown was an Australia-born Fijian educator,politician and diplomat. He was a member of the House of Representatives from 1966 to 1977 and served as Minister for Natural Resources and Minister for Agriculture,Fisheries and Forests between 1967 and 1977,later becoming Fijian consul in Sydney.
Misael Hocog Ogo was a Northern Mariana Islands politician. He served as a member of the House of Representatives from 1977 to 1983.
Jonati Malamala Mavoa was a Fijian civil servant and politician. He served as an MP from 1966 until his death,and held several ministerial positions from 1969 onwards.
Naboua T. Ratieta was an I-Kiribati politician who became the first Chief Minister of the Gilbert and Ellice Islands in 1974. The Ellice Islands separated from the colony the following year,and he remained Chief Minister of the Gilbert Islands until 1978. He also served as an MP from 1968 until his death.
Ratu Napolioni Naulia Dawai was a Fijian chief and politician. He served as a member of the Senate and House of Representatives from 1970 to 1986.
Mosese Qionibaravi was a Fijian chief,civil servant and politician. He served as a member of the House of Representatives from 1973 until his death,also holding the offices of Speaker of the House,Minister of Foreign Affairs,Tourism and Finance,and Deputy Prime Minister.
