Savage Circus is a German-Swedish power metal band originally formed as a side project by Thomas "Thomen" Stauch following his departure from Blind Guardian.
Savage Circus began when Stauch approached his friend Piet Sielck to see if he would be interested in joining Thomen's new project, to which Piet agreed. Piet then introduced Stauch to a Swedish band called Persuader. Stauch was impressed by the band and particularly liked the fact that their vocalist sounded remarkably like Hansi Kürsch. [1] Stauch quickly expressed his desire to have Jens Carlsson, the singer of Persuader, join the band. Jens brought along Persuader guitarist Emil Norberg. Their debut album, Dreamland Manor , was released in August 2005.
Thomen Stauch was dismissed from the band on 17 August 2007 due to health issues, which led to the cancellation of many shows. [2] In September 2007, Mike Terrana joined the band as the new drummer, and Yenz Leonhardt became a full member at the same time. The release of the follow-up to Dreamland Manor, titled Of Doom and Death, was initially expected in early 2009 but was later postponed to 23 October. [3]
In 2011, Piet Sielck left the band to focus more on his primary band, Iron Savior. [4] Upon his departure, Piet indicated that he was entrusting the band's future to members Jens and Emil. [5] In 2012, Mike Terrana left to collaborate with vocalist Tarja Turunen. Subsequently, Yenz Leonhardt also departed, leaving only Jens and Emil as the remaining members. Later in 2012, Thomen Stauch's return to the band was announced, along with the addition of second guitarist Thorsten "Toto" Hain and keyboardist Michael "Mi" Schüren. [6] [7] On 9 February 2014, Jens and Emil announced their departure from the band, citing scheduling conflicts between Savage Circus and their main band, Persuader. Although no official announcement was made, a photo posted on the band's official Facebook page by Toto on 20 March mentioned Axel Morgan as a member of "SC 3.0."
The band is currently working on a third album. [8] As of 18 November 2014, there have been no further updates regarding the band's third studio album. The future of the band remains uncertain, as Thomen has started a new project called Serious Black, Toto has returned to his previous band, Wortmord, and Mi will be extensively touring with Blind Guardian during 2015–2016.
In a 2021 interview, Emil Norberg was asked about the current status of Savage Circus. He responded, "Savage Circus is a closed chapter unless someone throws a lot of money at us, but I would not mind it. That would certainly be fun." [9]
The musical style of Savage Circus draws parallels to both Blind Guardian and Persuader, characterized by its singing style and multi-layered vocal arrangements. Additionally, the band's first two albums incorporate elements reminiscent of Iron Savior, owing to Piet Sielck's songwriting contributions.
Piet Sielck devised the band's name. The term "circus" reflects the diverse nationalities of the band members, as the group initially comprised both German and Swedish musicians. Conversely, "savage" denotes the "wild" nature of their music. [1]
Jens Carlsson is frequently noted for his vocal similarity to Hansi Kürsch of Blind Guardian. In an interview following the release of Dreamland Manor , Thomen remarked that Hansi appreciated Jens because:
You can hear that he is not copying me. You can really hear that he has a voice like me. If he would copy me I wouldn't like it. But that is really strange, because there would not exist much people in the world that really sound so similar to me. And this guy really sounds similar to me, but you hear that he doesn't copy me, because in the moment where he sings more clear, he sounds totally different than me. [1]

Blind Guardian is a German power metal band formed in 1984 in Krefeld, West Germany. They are often credited as one of the seminal and most influential bands in the power metal and speed metal subgenres. Nine musicians have been part of the band's lineup throughout its history, which currently includes singer Hansi Kürsch, guitarists André Olbrich and Marcus Siepen, and, since 2005, drummer Frederik Ehmke.
Nightfall in Middle-Earth is the sixth studio album by the German power metal band Blind Guardian. It was released on 28 April 1998 through Virgin Records. It is a concept album based on J. R. R. Tolkien's The Silmarillion, a book of tales from the First Age of Middle-earth, recounting the troubled history of Beleriand as the Elves battle with the Dark Lord Morgoth. The album contains not only songs but also spoken parts narrating parts of the story. The cover depicts a scene from The Silmarillion, the elf Lúthien dancing in front of the Dark Lord Morgoth.
A Night at the Opera is the seventh studio album by the German power metal band Blind Guardian, released in 2002. It is named after the 1975 Queen album of the same name, which is itself named after the Marx brothers film of the same name.
Imaginations from the Other Side is the fifth studio album by the German power metal band Blind Guardian, released in 1995. The atmosphere of this album is darker in comparison to their earlier works, such as Battalions of Fear, which had a relatively light tone. This album also marks the first since Battalions of Fear which Kai Hansen did not contribute guest vocals or guitar, and the last album to feature vocalist Hansi Kürsch as bassist. It was also their first album to spawn singles, namely "A Past and Future Secret" and "Bright Eyes". It was remastered and re-released on 15 June 2007, with bonus tracks and videos.
Somewhere Far Beyond is the fourth studio album by the German power metal band Blind Guardian. It was released in 1992 and produced by Kalle Trapp. The cover artwork was created by Andreas Marschall, who also drew the artwork for other Blind Guardian's releases. The album saw the band creating its own original sound, while still employing most of their speed/power metal techniques.
The Forgotten Tales is the first compilation album by German power metal band Blind Guardian. It was published in 1996. The cover artwork was created by Andreas Marschall. "'The Forgotten Tales'" contains several cover versions of popular songs, including "Mr. Sandman", "Surfin' U.S.A.", and "Spread Your Wings" as well as alternate versions of the band's previous works. Remastered and re-released on 15 June 2007, with bonus tracks and videos.

Battalions of Fear is the debut studio album by the German power metal band Blind Guardian, released in 1988. The album is a raw and unpolished speed metal effort that touches on thrash metal. It lacks many of the stylistic flourishes that would mark the band's music in later years, focusing more on speed and aggression. The opening track "Majesty" remains a fan favorite and is often featured in the band's live performances. This album was remastered, remixed and re-released on 15 June 2007, with the whole first demo tape, Symphonies of Doom, of the band as part of the bonus tracks. The album was again re-released as part of the A Traveler's Guide to Space and Time boxset with minor adjustments to the mixing and with new mastering.
Thomas "Thomen" Stauch, also known by his nickname The Omen, is a German heavy metal drummer, best known as the co-founder and former drummer of Blind Guardian.
Iron Savior is a German power metal band that was formed in Hamburg in 1996. Following a period of several years working behind the scenes in music production, multi-instrumentalist and producer/engineer Piet Sielck joined with former Helloween bandmate Kai Hansen and then-drummer for Blind Guardian, Thomen Stauch in a new project that would blend power metal with a high-concept science fiction story. The band's debut album Iron Savior introduced the story that would be told over the course of multiple albums, featuring a self-aware space vessel called the Iron Savior and its relationship to the mythical lost civilization of Atlantis.
Persuader is a Swedish power metal band from Umeå in the Swedish province of Västerbotten Norrland. The band was formed in 1997, and they have since released five full-length albums. They have a sound similar to bands including early Blind Guardian, Iron Savior, and Nocturnal Rites, although Persuader includes influences of thrash metal also. Members Jens and Emil joined the band Savage Circus in 2005, started by Thomen Stauch before leaving Blind Guardian.
Dreamland Manor is the debut album of German power metal band Savage Circus. The album sounds similar to older classic Blind Guardian.
Iron Savior is the debut studio album by the German power metal band Iron Savior. It was released in 1997 on Noise Records. It is the only album to feature former Blind Guardian drummer Thomen Stauch.
Somewhere Out in Space is an album by German power metal band, Gamma Ray. It was released on 25 August 1997 and is the band's fifth studio album. Continuing in the tradition of the previous four albums, it contained yet another different lineup, but would also be the first album to feature the band's longest standing lineup. The album featured Dirk Schlächter on bass for the first time since his guest appearance on Heading for Tomorrow, Henjo Richter on guitar and Dan Zimmermann on drums.
Megatropolis is Iron Savior's sixth full-length album, released on June 4, 2007. It was recorded, mixed and engineered at Powerhouse Studios in Hamburg in February 2007 with the drums being recorded at HammerMusic in January 2007. The album was re-released in 2015 as Megatropolis 2.0 with partly re-recorded vocal tracks, new mixed sound and a different track listing, as the band was dissatisfied with the original product. It is the last album to feature Yenz Leonhardt on bass, who would then join Stormwarrior shortly that year.
Piet Sielck is a German guitarist, singer and record producer. He is the frontman of the power metal band Iron Savior as well as owner of the studio Powerhouse in Hamburg.
Of Doom and Death is the second full-length album by the German power metal band Savage Circus. It was released on October 23, 2009 via Dockyard 1 Records.
Tales from the Twilight World is the third studio album by the German power metal band Blind Guardian, released on 16 July 1990.
The Landing is the seventh full-length album by the German power metal band Iron Savior, released on 18 November 2011. It was recorded, mixed and mastered at Powerhouse Studio in Hamburg from June - September 2011 with the drums being recorded at Rekorder Studio in August 2011. It is the first album to feature returning bassist Jan-Sören Eckert since the 2002 album Condition Red.
A Traveler's Guide to Space and Time is the first box set by German power metal band Blind Guardian. It contains 15 CDs and covers the bands discography during the so-called Virgin years, between 1988 and 2004. Along with seven studio albums, two live albums and one compilation album, it also includes Imaginations Through the Looking Glass in audio format, a special edition of Nightfall In Middle-Earth and a CD of demos and rarities. It also came with a 20-page glossy booklet, limited and numbered Blind Guardian art print on special paper and a guitar pick with band logo. It is a strictly limited edition, as only 8000 copies were made worldwide.
