Savage Circus is a German/Swedish power metal band originally formed as a side project by Thomas "Thomen" Stauch before leaving Blind Guardian.
Savage Circus began when Stauch asked his friend Piet Sielck if he was interested in joining Thomen's new project, which he was. Piet then introduced a Swedish band called Persuader to Thomen. Thomen liked the band and also liked the fact that the vocalist sounded very much like Hansi Kürsch. [1] Thomen immediately said that he wanted to have Jens Carlsson (singer of Persuader) in the band. Jens brought with him Persuader guitarist Emil Norberg. Their debut album, Dreamland Manor , was released in August 2005.
Thomen Stauch was dismissed from the band on 17 August 2007 due to his frail health, leading to the cancellation of many shows. [2] In September 2007, Mike Terrana joined the band as the new drummer. At the same time Yenz Leonhardt became a full member of the band. The release of the Dreamland Manor's follow-up, Of Doom and Death, was originally expected to be released in early 2009 but was pushed back to 23 October. [3]
In 2011, Piet Sielck left the band to concentrate more on his main band Iron Savior. [4] Upon leaving, Piet said he was putting the fate of the band into the hands of members Jens and Emil. [5] In 2012, Mike Terrana left to work with vocalist Tarja Turunen. Eventually Yenz Leonhardt also left, leaving only remaining members Jens and Emil. Later in 2012, the comeback of Thomen Stauch to the band was announced, together with the addition of second guitarist Thorsten "Toto" Hain and keyboardist Michael "Mi" Schüren. [6] [7] On 9 February 2014 Jens and Emil announced them leaving the band citing conflicting schedules with Savage Circus and their main band Persuader as the reason. Although no official announcement has been made, in a picture posted on the band's official Facebook page by Toto on 20 March Axel Morgan is mentioned as a member of "SC 3.0".
The band is currently working on a third album. [8] As of 18 November 2014 there has been no further updates regarding the band's third studio album. The future of the band remains unclear, as Thomen has started a new band called Serious Black, Toto has returned to his previous band, Wortmord, and Mi will be touring excessively with Blind Guardian during 2015–2016.
In a 2021 interview Emil Norberg was asked about the current state of Savage Circus. He answered with "Savage Circus is a closed chapter unless someone throws a lot of money at us, but I would not mind it. That would certainly be fun." [9]
The musical style is similar to both Blind Guardian and Persuader due to the singing style and multi-layered vocals used in the band. The band's first two albums also contain some elements of Iron Savior, due to Piet Sielck's writing.
Piet Sielck came up with the band's name. The word circus, refers to the band's members being of several different nationalities. Originally the band consisted of German and Swedish members. Savage, on the other hand, is for "wild" music. [1]
Jens Carlsson is often compared with sounding highly similar to Hansi Kürsch of Blind Guardian. In an interview after the release of Dreamland Manor , Thomen said that Hansi was fond of Jens, because:
You can hear that he is not copying me. You can really hear that he has a voice like me. If he would copy me I wouldn't like it. But that is really strange, because there would not exist much people in the world that really sound so similar to me. And this guy really sounds similar to me, but you hear that he doesn't copy me, because in the moment where he sings more clear, he sounds totally different than me. [1]

Blind Guardian is a German power metal band formed in 1984 in Krefeld, West Germany. They are often credited as one of the seminal and most influential bands in the power metal and speed metal subgenres. Nine musicians have been a part of the band's line-up in its history, which currently consists of singer Hansi Kürsch, guitarists André Olbrich and Marcus Siepen and, since 2005, drummer Frederik Ehmke.
Nightfall in Middle-Earth is the sixth studio album by the German power metal band Blind Guardian. It was released on 28 April 1998 through Virgin Records. It is a concept album based on J. R. R. Tolkien's The Silmarillion, a book of tales from the First Age of Middle-earth, recounting the troubled history of Beleriand as the Elves battle with the Dark Lord Morgoth. The album contains not only songs but also spoken parts narrating parts of the story. The cover depicts a scene from The Silmarillion, the elf Lúthien dancing in front of the Dark Lord Morgoth.
A Night at the Opera is the seventh studio album by German power metal band Blind Guardian, released in 2002. It is named after the 1975 Queen album of the same name, which is itself named after the Marx brothers film of the same name.
Imaginations from the Other Side is the fifth studio album by German power metal band Blind Guardian, released in 1995. The atmosphere of this album is darker in comparison to their earlier works, such as Battalions of Fear, which had a relatively light tone. This album also marks the first since Battalions of Fear which Kai Hansen did not contribute guest vocals or guitar, and the last album to feature vocalist Hansi Kürsch as bassist. It was also their first album to spawn singles, namely "A Past and Future Secret" and "Bright Eyes". It was remastered and re-released on 15 June 2007, with bonus tracks and videos.
Somewhere Far Beyond is the fourth studio album by German power metal band Blind Guardian. It was released in 1992 and produced by Kalle Trapp. The cover artwork was created by Andreas Marschall, who also drew the artwork for other Blind Guardian's releases. The album saw the band creating its own original sound, while still employing most of their speed/power metal techniques.
The Forgotten Tales is the first compilation album by German power metal band Blind Guardian. It was published in 1996. The cover artwork was created by Andreas Marschall. "'The Forgotten Tales'" contains several cover versions of popular songs, including "Mr. Sandman", "Surfin' U.S.A.", and "Spread Your Wings" as well as alternate versions of the band's previous works. Remastered and re-released on 15 June 2007, with bonus tracks and videos.

Battalions of Fear is the debut studio album by German power metal band Blind Guardian, released in 1988. The album is a raw and unpolished speed metal effort that touches on thrash metal. It lacks many of the stylistic flourishes that would mark the band's music in later years, focusing more on speed and aggression. The opening track "Majesty" remains a fan favorite and is often featured in the band's live performances. This album was remastered, remixed and re-released on 15 June 2007, with the whole first demo tape, Symphonies of Doom, of the band as part of the bonus tracks. The album was again re-released as part of the A Traveler's Guide to Space and Time boxset with minor adjustments to the mixing and with new mastering.
Thomas "Thomen" Stauch, also known by his nickname The Omen, is a German heavy metal drummer, mostly known as the co-founder and former drummer of Blind Guardian.
Iron Savior is a German power metal band that was formed in Hamburg in 1996. Following a period of several years working behind the scenes in music production, multi-instrumentalist and producer/engineer Piet Sielck joined with former Helloween bandmate Kai Hansen and then-drummer for Blind Guardian, Thomen Stauch in a new project that would blend power metal with a high-concept science fiction story. The band's debut album Iron Savior introduced the story that would be told over the course of multiple albums, featuring a self-aware space vessel called the Iron Savior and its relationship to the mythical lost civilization of Atlantis.
Persuader is a Swedish power metal band from Umeå in the Swedish province of Västerbotten Norrland. The band was formed in 1997, and they have since released five full-length albums. They have a sound similar to bands including early Blind Guardian, Iron Savior, and Nocturnal Rites, although Persuader includes influences of thrash metal also. Members Jens and Emil joined the band Savage Circus in 2005, started by Thomen Stauch after he left Blind Guardian.
Dreamland Manor is the debut album of German power metal band Savage Circus. The album sounds similar to older classic Blind Guardian.
Iron Savior is the debut studio album by the German power metal band Iron Savior. It was released in 1997 on Noise Records. It is the only album to feature former Blind Guardian drummer Thomen Stauch.
Megatropolis is Iron Savior's sixth full-length album, released on June 4, 2007. It was recorded, mixed and engineered at Powerhouse Studios in Hamburg in February 2007 with the drums being recorded at HammerMusic in January 2007. The album was re-released in 2015 as Megatropolis 2.0 with partly re-recorded vocal tracks, new mixed sound and a different track listing, as the band was dissatisfied with the original product. It is the last album to feature Yenz Leonhardt on bass, who would then join Stormwarrior shortly that year.
Piet Sielck is a German guitarist, singer and record producer. He is the frontman of the power metal band Iron Savior as well as owner of the studio Powerhouse in Hamburg.
Of Doom and Death is the second full-length album by the German power metal band Savage Circus. It was released on October 23, 2009 via Dockyard 1 Records.
"Banish from Sanctuary" is a song by the German power metal band Blind Guardian. It was released as the only single from their 1989 album Follow the Blind. The single was pressed on 7" green vinyl and includes the song "Hall of the King" as a B-side. Only 500 copies of the vinyl were pressed.
Tales from the Twilight World is the third studio album by German power metal band Blind Guardian, released on 2 October 1990.
The Fiction Maze is the fourth studio album by Swedish power metal band Persuader. The band describes the album as "the perfect mix of everything we've done so far, expanded on the Persuader sound while keeping the core that is the band" and "a beast of an album, the true pinnacle of our career so far." In an interview with Swedish newspaper Västerbottens-Kuriren, Emil noted that the album is "a little more aggressive and a little heavier" than their previous work. The album is Persuader's first release in seven years.
A Traveler's Guide to Space and Time is the first box set by German power metal band Blind Guardian. It contains 15 CDs and covers the bands discography during the so-called Virgin years, between 1988 and 2004. Along with seven studio albums, two live albums and one compilation album, it also includes Imaginations Through the Looking Glass in audio format, a special edition of Nightfall In Middle-Earth and a CD of demos and rarities. It also came with a 20-page glossy booklet, limited and numbered Blind Guardian art print on special paper and a guitar pick with band logo. It is a strictly limited edition, as only 8000 copies were made worldwide.
