The Punjabi Suba movement was a long-drawn political agitation, launched by Punjabi speaking people demanding the creation of autonomous Punjabi Suba, or Punjabi-speaking state, in the post-independence Indian state of East Punjab. The movement is defined as the forerunner of Khalistan movement.
Amrita Pritam was an Indian novelist, essayist and poet, who wrote in Punjabi and Hindi. A prominent figure in Punjabi literature, she is the recipient of the 1956 Sahitya Akademi Award. Dara Singh Randhawa was an Indian professional wrestler, actor, director and politician. He started acting in 1952 and was the first sportsman to be nominated to the Rajya Sabha of India. He worked as Hindi and Punjabi film producer, director and writer, and he acted in films and television. His role of Hanuman in the film Bajrangbali (1976) and in Ramanand Sagar's Ramayan made him popular. Singh was inducted into the Legacy Category of the WWE Hall of Fame Class of 2018.
Rajkumar Kohli was an Indian film director. He was famous for directing several popular Bollywood films like Lootera (1965) starring Dara Singh and Nishi as well as Punjabi films such as Dulla Bhatti (1966). His other notable Hindi films included films with ensemble cast such as Nagin (1976), Jaani Dushman (1979), Badle Ki Aag (1982), Naukar Biwi Ka (1983), Raaj Tilak (1984) etc. His films frequently featured actors like Sunil Dutt, Dharmendra, Jeetendra, Shatrughan Sinha as well as actresses Reena Roy, Anita Raj.
Kartar Singh Sarabha was an Indian revolutionary. He was 15-years old when he became a member of Ghadar Party; he then became a leading luminary member and started fighting for the independence movement. He was one of the most active members of the movement. In November 1915 at Central Jail, Lahore, he was executed for his role in the movement when he was 19 years old.
Gadar: Ek Prem Katha is a 2001 Indian Hindi-language romantic period action drama film directed by Anil Sharma from a story written by Shaktimaan Talwar and was set during the Partition of India in 1947. Loosely based on the life of Boota Singh, the film stars Sunny Deol, Ameesha Patel and Utkarsh Sharma in lead roles, alongside Amrish Puri, Lillete Dubey and Vivek Shauq in supporting roles.
Veerendra, born Subhash Dhadwal, was an Indian film actor, director, producer and writer who made 25 Punjabi-language films in his 12-year career. He made his debut with the film Teri Meri Ek Jindri, released in 1975, featuring Dharmendra. He was a regular in Punjabi films of the 1980s. Some of his more popular films were Lambhardarni, Balbiro Bhabhi and Dushmani Dee Agg, which was released after his death.
Giani Gurmukh Singh Musafir was an Indian politician and Punjabi language writer. He was the 5th Chief Minister of Punjab from 1 November 1966 to 8 March 1967.

Sadda Haq is a 2013 Indian Punjabi-language film directed by Mandeep Benipal set in the late 1980s and early 1990s during the Punjab insurgency. It portrays filmmakers' perception of what prompted young men in the state to rise up and fight against what was a corrupt police and government system. The film evoked polarising reactions even before it was released, with sections of the Sikh community saying that it depicted the real face of police atrocities. Critics on the other hand felt that the movie was a mere "glorification" of terrorists.
Chaar Sahibzaade is a 2014 Indian Punjabi animated historical drama film written and directed by Harry Baweja. It is based on the sacrifices of the sons of the 10th Sikh guru Guru Gobind Singh Ji—Sahibzada Ajit Singh, Jujhar Singh, Zorawar Singh, and Fateh Singh. Om Puri provided the film's narration, and the voice artists for various characters were kept anonymous. It was also the highest grossing Punjabi film when it was released. It was surpassed by Carry on Jatta 2 in July 2018.
Prem Dhawan (1923–2001) was an Indian lyricist, music composer, choreographer and actor of Bollywood known for his patriotic songs, especially for the lyrics and compositions for the 1965 Manoj Kumar starrer, Shaheed. He was a winner of the National Film Award for Best Lyrics in 1971 and was honoured by the Government of India in 1970 with Padma Shri, the fourth highest Indian civilian award.
Nanak Dukhiya Sub Sansar is a Punjabi language film directed by Dara Singh. The lyrics were written by Prem Dhawan. Dhawan was awarded National Film Award for Best Lyrics in 1972 for its movie songs.
