Schalk Willem Petrus Burger Snr. (born 6 October 1955) is a former South African rugby union player. [1]

Playing career

Burger was born in Cape Town and received his schooling in Paarl, at Paarl Gimnasium. In 1973 het represented the Western Province schools rugby team at the Craven Week tournament. He made his senior provincial debut in 1974 for North Western Cape and in 1975 he enrolled at the University of Stellenbosch for a BCom degree, representing the Maties on the rugby field. Burger made his debut for Western Province in 1977 and after the 1978 season he moved to Eastern Province. During the period 1979 to 1983, Burger played 72 matches for Eastern Province, including 40 as captain. In 1984 he returned to Western Province. [2]

Burger made his test match debut for the Springboks against the visiting England team on 2 June 1984 in Port Elizabeth. In 1986 he played in the four test matches against the New Zealand Cavaliers. Burger was capped 6 times for the Springboks. [3]

Burger is the father of Schalk Burger, a former Springbok Loose-forward and Springbok Captain.

Accolades

Burger was one of the five nominees for 1985 SA Rugby player of the Year award. The other nominees for the award were Jannie Breedt, Gerrie Sonnekus, Danie Gerber and the eventual winner of the award, Naas Botha. [4]

Daniël Hartman Craven was a South African rugby union player (1931–1938), national coach, national and international rugby administrator, academic, and author. Schalk Willem Petrus Burger Jr. is a former South African professional rugby union player. He played as a flanker for Saracens in the English Premiership and has won 86 caps for South Africa.

Marius Joubert Rugby player

Marius Charl Joubert is a South African rugby union player who played as a centre for Stormers in Super Rugby. He has previously played for the Boland Cavaliers, Free State Cheetahs, ASM Clermont Auvergne and Western Province in the Currie Cup and the Stormers and the Cheetahs in Super Rugby. Joubert was educated at Paarl Gimnasium, alongside current Springboks and former Western Province and Stormers teammates De Wet Barry and Jean de Villiers. A few years later, the same school produced another current Springbok star in Schalk Burger.

Pieter Willem Gabriel Rossouw is a South African former professional rugby player and current coach. Rossouw played wing for Western Province in the Currie Cup and the Stormers in the Super Rugby competition. He played a total of 43 times for the Springboks, making him one of the most capped Springbok wingers after South Africa's readmission to international rugby. He was also one of South Africa's most prolific try-scoring wingers, post-isolation, with only Breyton Paulse(26) and Bryan Habana(53) scoring more tries. He is 7th on the all-time try-scoring list for the Springboks. Rossouw is currently the backline coach of the Bulls in Super rugby and the Blue Bulls in the Currie Cup. He was known as "Slaptjips", apparently because the sight of his running legs was like potato chips slapping together. Pieter is the older brother of Chris Rossouw, who played flyhalf for Western Province and the Free State Cheetahs.
