J. Scott Savage (born January 31, 1963) is an American author of fantasy, horror, and mystery novels, best known for his middle-grade series such as Case File 13 , FarWorld, and Mysteries of Cove. He also writes adult fiction under the name Jeffrey S. Savage.

Early life and education

Savage was born in Oakland, California and grew up in northern California. He studied at Sierra College and Utah Valley University. [1]

Career

Before becoming a full-time writer, Savage worked in various industries including technology, where he served as the CEO of an internet company. [2]

Savage’s debut novel was Cutting Edge (2001), written under his adult fiction name. He gained wider recognition with Water Keep (2008), the first book in the FarWorld series. [3]

Case File 13

His Case File 13 series combines humor and horror for a middle-grade audience. The first book, Zombie Kid, received a positive review from Kirkus Reviews, which described it as "the perfect balance between rib-tickling humor and bone-chilling adventure." [4] The series was praised for appealing to reluctant readers and for blending monsters, mystery, and laughs. [5]

Mysteries of Cove

His Mysteries of Cove series, beginning with Fires of Invention (2015), is a steampunk adventure praised for its creative world-building and themes of individuality. It was a finalist for the 2015 AML Award for Middle Grade Novel. [6]

Writing style

Savage’s middle-grade books are known for mixing creepy or thrilling themes with humor and friendship-driven plots. His adult fiction, such as Dark Memories, leans more toward suspense and horror. Dark Memories won the 2013 Whitney Award for Best Speculative Novel. [7]

Personal life

Savage lives in Utah with his wife, Jennifer. He has four children and nine grandchildren. He is a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. [8]
