Andy Cartwright, known professionally as Seabuckthorn, is an English guitarist and producer, based in France. As Seabuckthorn, he has released a number of albums of primarily guitar-based instrumental music with folk and contemporary influences. [1]

Career

Cartwright began releasing music as Seabuckthorn in 2008, self-publishing collections of tracks on home-made CDs, with his first album on a label coming in 2011 in the form of In Nightfall, a mini-album released by France-based Bookmaker Records. [2] [3] At that time, a reviewer for the local music magazine Nightshift compared his work to that of Alexander Tucker and Matt Elliott, describing it as "avant-garde guitar" instrumental music, constructed from layered acoustic tracks, arpeggiated arrangements and "almost sitar-esque" drones, producing an eerie atmosphere, and commented that the pieces are well-constructed but lack striking melodies. [3]

The album The Silence Woke Me came the following year, also under Bookmaker, and was described by Nightshift's Tom McKibbin as more rhythmically involved and hook-based. [4] Cartwright was recording and mixing his next album (third under Bookmaker and fifth overall) – They Haunted Most Thickly – for two years before its 2015 release. [5] According to him as cited on the label's website, it is a "collection of songs played mainly on an open C tuned resonator guitar & an open A tuned 12-string acoustic guitar". [6]

The music on Cartwright's 2016 EP, I Could See the Smoke was also played using the 12-string and resonator guitar, with percussion. The production features "ghost voices [that] float across the top of everything, eerie wails and moans" according to Cyclic Defrost 's Lachlan Wrong. He further described the direction as "murky" and "dense", and the material as demanding, noting that studio techniques were used to alter the sound of instruments, sometimes beyond recognition, including guitars "resembling a violin or viola". It was released on the American label Lost Tribe Sound, [7] and was recorded following a 2016 European tour. [8] Subsequently, the 2017 Seabuckthorn album Turns was released by the same label. On three of the songs, he was joined on double bass by a label mate – American composer and producer William Ryan Fritch. Describing the music's broadly folk style, Exclaim! 's Scott A. Gray noted neo-classical and post-rock elements, and identified the sounds of Americana, classical music and drones of Asian music in Cartwright's guitar approach. [9] Following up on his review of the 2016 EP, Wrong wrote of a "cleaner and brighter sound" and an "airier and more relaxed approach to playing and composition", and stated that the songs have a greater sense of resolution. [10] The album's mastering was done by James Plotkin and the cover by Gregory Euclide. [11]

In 2017, an EP with Loscil was released by the label Thesis. [12]

His later recordings have been released by labels including LAAPS, IIKKI, Eilean Rec, Fluid Audio and Quiet Details. [13]

Cartwright also releases electronic music under his own name, as well as making music for use in film, documentaries, websites and contemporary dance.[ citation needed ]

Personal life

Cartwright was born near Oxford and moved to the town of Saint-Pierre-d'Argençon in the Southern French Alps. [14]

:PAPERCUTZ is a Portuguese electronic music act formed as a side project in Porto that became a fully active band in 2008. Bruno Miguel is the only official member of Papercutz and solely responsible for its musical direction. After recordings, Bruno assembles a live band to perform with him which may include musicians used on studio recordings. Past musicians have included vocalists Melissa Veras, a US singer with Portuguese ascendancy born in New York and Portuguese Marisa Pinto, Marcela Freitas as well as instrumentalists Bruno Ribeiro, Nuno Sarafa and Francisco Bernardo, among others.

The band's current line-up consists of lead vocalist Chris Roetter, guitarists Zach Pishney and Cody Cavanaugh, and drummer Roman Garcia. Wishful Thinking are an Australian pop-punk band that formed in 1998, disbanded in 2006 and reformed in 2019. The line-up includes Carl W. Jackson on guitar and lead vocals, Alistair Elkins on bass guitar, Lachlan Jackson on guitar, and Leigh Thompson on drums. Brothers Carl & Lachlan Jackson formed the band with their neighbour Brendan Lichtendonk on drums in 1998 whilst living in Launceston, Tasmania. Carl & Lachlan relocated the band to Melbourne in 2001 and Leigh Thompson joined on drums. They were one of Australia's "buzz" punk/pop acts and were the first band signed to Boomtown Records in 2002. Wishful Thinking's musical style was pop punk and followed in the style of bands such as Blink 182 and New Found Glory.

Greta Van Fleet is an American rock band formed in Frankenmuth, Michigan, in 2012. It consists of the Kiszka brothers: twins Josh (vocals) and Jake (guitar), Sam, and Danny Wagner (drums). They were signed to Lava Records in March 2017, and a month later they released their debut studio EP, Black Smoke Rising. Their debut single, "Highway Tune", topped the Billboard U.S. Mainstream Rock and Active Rock charts in September 2017 for four weeks in a row. Their second EP, From the Fires, containing the four songs from Black Smoke Rising and four new songs, was released on November 10, 2017, alongside a second single, "Safari Song". From the Fires went on to win the 2019 Grammy Award for Best Rock Album.
