Seamus O'Connell is an Australian former professional rugby league footballer who played in the 1980s. He played for St. George, Illawarra Steelers and Eastern Suburbs in the New South Wales Rugby League (NSWRL) competition.

Playing career

O'Connell made his first grade debut for Eastern Suburbs in round 1 of the 1983 NSWRFL season against Western Suburbs at Sydney Sports Ground. After making 22 appearances for Easts, O'Connell departed the club and signed for Illawarra. O'Connell's two years at Illawarra were not successful with the club finishing with back to back Wooden Spoon's. In 1987, O'Connell joined St. George and played 18 games for the club mainly as a prop before being released at the end of 1988. [2] [3] [4]

The Illawarra Steelers are an Australian rugby league football club based in the city of Wollongong, New South Wales. The club competed in Australia's top-level rugby league competition from 1982 until 1998. On 13 December 1980, they were the first non-Sydney based team to be admitted into the New South Wales Rugby League premiership, with the Canberra Raiders being admitted later ensuring an even number of teams in the competition for the start of their first season, 1982. Over their seventeen years in the top grade, the club received three wooden spoons, made the play-offs twice and had a total of three of its players selected to play for the Australia national rugby league team.

Wally O'Connell OAM was an Australian rugby league footballer who played in the 1940s and 1950s, and coached in the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s. He was a five-eighth for the Australian national team. He played in ten Tests between 1948 and 1951 as captain on one occasion. Wally's younger brother Barry also played first grade football for Easts and Manly.

The 1982 NSWRFL season was the 75th season of professional rugby league football in Australia and saw the New South Wales Rugby Football League’s first expansion since 1967 with the introduction of the first two clubs from outside the Sydney area in over half a century: the Canberra Raiders and the Illawarra Steelers. Thus a total of 14 clubs competed for the J.J. Giltinan Shield and newly-created Winfield Cup during the season, which culminated in a grand final between the Parramatta and Manly-Warringah clubs. This season, NSWRFL teams also competed for the 1982 KB Cup which was won by Manly-Warringah.
