Prior to this stint in Phoenix, McLaughlin was chief meteorologist for MSNBC, joining the United States-based 24-hour cable news television network in July 2004. He was also the meteorologist on the Sunday editions of NBC's The Today Show. He contributed to NBC Weather Plus+, NBC Nightly News , and other NBC News/MSNBC/CNBC programs. McLaughlin's prior stint in Phoenix was as the longtime Chief Meteorologist, as well as anchor and general assignment reporter at NBC affiliate KPNX Channel 12. Currently he is a meteorologist, news anchor and reporter for KPHO CBS 5 in Phoenix. McLaughlin has won several Emmys.
His hometown is Belmond, Iowa.

McLaughlin graduated from Iowa State University with a bachelor's degree in broadcast journalism where he was a member of the Fraternity Tau Kappa Epsilon. He holds a certificate in meteorology from Mississippi State University.

The Edward R. Murrow Forum on Issues in Journalism is an annual event held at Tufts University. It is sponsored by the Film and Media Studies Program (FMS) at Tufts University, the Edward R. Murrow Center for the Advancement of Public Diplomacy, and the Jonathan M. Tisch College of Citizenship and Public Service. Dedicated to illuminating aspects of the many contributions Edward R. Murrow made to journalism and public diplomacy, the Forum brings together interdisciplinary panels to reflect on Murrow’s legacy and relate it to contemporary issues in journalism. The Forum debuted in 2006 with former Nightline host Ted Koppel serving as the keynote speaker and moderator examining the contemporary state of the news business. In 2007 retired CBS News anchor Dan Rather led a panel discussing the coverage of war and conflicts. In 2008 former NBC Nightly News anchor Tom Brokaw and panelists explored the current state of political coverage. Wes Hohenstein is an American on-camera meteorologist for WNCN in Raleigh, North Carolina who holds the American Meteorological Society Seal of Approval. Hohenstein brings viewers the weather on CBS 17 at 5, 6 and 11 p.m. and has worked for WNCN since 2006. He has also worked in Louisiana, Utah, Texas and Arizona. While in Houston, he was known for the Sunshine Award, where he visited schools across southeast Texas in the station's helicopter nearly every day.
