Sebastian Deterding is a German scientist. He is currently Chair in Design Engineering and Professor of Design Engineering at Imperial College, London. Previously, he held the position of Chair Professor of Digital Creativity at the University of York. [1] He established the gamification research network and co-authored "The Gameful World" (MIT Press, 2015), a book delving into the integration of gaming elements into various aspects of culture. [2]
Deterding is the founder and lead designer of Coding Conduct, a design agency. His collaborations have spanned a range of eminent clients, including the BBC, BMW, Deutsche Telekom, Greenpeace, Novartis, Otto Group, along with numerous startups. He also established the Gamification Research Network and co-authored "The Gameful World" (MIT Press, 2015), a book delving into the integration of gaming elements into various aspects of culture. Interaction design, often abbreviated as IxD, is "the practice of designing interactive digital products, environments, systems, and services." While interaction design has an interest in form, its main area of focus rests on behavior. Rather than analyzing how things are, interaction design synthesizes and imagines things as they could be. This element of interaction design is what characterizes IxD as a design field, as opposed to a science or engineering field.

The terms design computing and other relevant terms including design and computation and computational design refer to the study and practice of design activities through the application and development of novel ideas and techniques in computing. One of the early groups to coin this term was the Key Centre of Design Computing and Cognition at the University of Sydney in Australia, which for nearly fifty years pioneered the research, teaching, and consulting of design and computational technologies. This group organised the academic conference series "Artificial Intelligence in Design (AID)" published by Springer during that period. In this approach a player evolves and moves seamlessly through various physical and virtual stages, brought together in one unified game space. Alongside the rising trend of gamification, the application of game mechanics to tasks that are not traditionally associated with play, a transreality approach to gaming incorporates mechanics that extend over time and space, effectively playing through a players day-to-day interactions.
