Sebastiao Mazarelo was an Indian politician and medical practitioner from Goa. He was the first member of the Goa,Daman and Diu Legislative Assembly from the Cuncolim Assembly constituency. He served for five years,from 1963 to 1967. He was also one of the notable individuals that played a pivotal role in the Goa Opinion Poll. [2] [3] [4] [5]
Sebastiao Mazarelo was born at Goreamorod,Velim. [6] He had a son,Wilson Benigno Duarte Mazarello,a former footballer and medical practitioner,who played for Associacao Academica de Goa. On 31 December 2020,ailing to his health,he died in London,aged 79.[ citation needed ]
The Daman and Diu Portuguese Creole,Portuguese:Língua Crioula de Damãon e Dio &by its speakers as Língua da Casa meaning "home language",refers to the variety of Indo-Portuguese creole spoken in the Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu,in the northern Konkan region of India. Before the Indian annexation of the territory,the creole spoken by the Damanese natives underwent a profound decreolisation in the erstwhile Portuguese Goa and Damaon colony,a phenomenon whereby the Indo-Portuguese creole reconverged with European Portuguese.

Velim,formerly Velliapura,is a large village situated in Salcete,neighbouring Quepem taluka,and falls under South Goa district,in the coastal state of Goa. The 1967 Goa status referendum popularly known as the Goa Opinion Poll was a referendum held in newly annexed union territory of Goa and Damaon in India,on 16 January 1967,to deal with the Konkani language agitation and to decide the future of Goa.
Uday Laxmikant Bhembre is an Indian lawyer,Konkani writer and former member of the Goa,Daman and Diu Legislative Assembly. He is noted for his role as the editor of the Konkani daily,Sunaparant,and as a Konkani language activist. Bhembre is also widely known as the lyricist of the famed Goan Konkani language song Channeache Rati.
The Konkani language agitations were a series of protests and demonstrations in India,concerning the uncertain future of the Konkani language. They were held by Goans in the former territory of Goa,Daman and Diu;then under the administration of the Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party (MGP). The protests involved citizen journalism,student activism &political demonstrations. The civil unrest ceased when official status for Konkani in the Devnagari script was granted.

Urminda Mascarenhas e Lima Leitao was an Indian politician,educator and businesswoman. She was a former member of the Goa,Daman and Diu Legislative Assembly,representing the Mormugao Assembly constituency from 1963 to 1967. Mascarenhas was the first woman MLA to be elected in the 1963 Goa,Daman and Diu Legislative Assembly election,also the first and only woman legislator from the Mormugao Assembly constituency. She was known for her diligent attitude and radical speeches in the state legislative assembly.
