Sebastiao Mazarelo was an Indian politician and medical practitioner. He was the first member of the Goa, Daman and Diu Legislative Assembly from the Cuncolim Assembly constituency. He served for five years, from 1963 to 1967. He was also one of the notable individuals that played a pivotal role in the Goa Opinion Poll. [3] [4] [5]

Early and personal life

Sebastiao Mazarelo was born at Goreamorod, Velim in Portuguese Goa. [6] He had a son, Wilson Benigno Duarte Mazarello, a former footballer and medical practitioner, who played for Associacao Academica de Goa. On 31 December 2020, ailing to his health, he died in London, aged 79. [7]

João Hugo Eduardo de Sequeira, popularly known as Dr. Jack de Sequeira, also known as Jak Siker according to local naming conventions, was an Indian politician and former surgeon who is widely considered in Goa to be the "Father of the Opinion Poll", which led to the former territory attaining statehood in 1987. De Sequeira was Goa's first Leader of the Opposition when the inaugural Goa, Daman and Diu Legislative Assembly was launched in 1963. He was born to Goan parents in British Burma, and shaped politics in Goa during the 1960s and 1970s in particular.

Velim is a large village situated in Salcete, neighbouring Quepem taluka, and falls under South Goa district, in the coastal state of Goa. It has access to the Arabian Sea via the Sal river that flows through it and shares its borders with neighbouring villages and towns of Assolna, Ambelim, Betul, and Cuncolim. The United Goans Party is a political party in state of Goa. It was formed in 1963 in the former union territory of Goa, Daman and Diu, with Jack de Sequeira as its party leader, when multiple regional parties merged during the Konkani language agitation.

Roque Santana Joao Fernandes was an Indian politician and freedom fighter who was a former member of the Goa, Daman and Diu Legislative Assembly from 1967 to 1977, representing the Cuncolim Assembly constituency. He is popularly known as the "Father of Goan Democracy" and was responsible for the introduction of democracy by objecting to the Lt. Governor's nomination through his satyagraha. He was one of the prominent people that contributed to Goa's freedom struggle.
